Over the past few years, Saoirse Ronan has blossomed into one of the most talented actresses throughout Hollywood. Though she is just 25 years old, Ronan has racked up the accolades in her young career. Among those include four Academy Award nominations for her performances over the past decade or so.

While the vast majority of her work has been met with universal praise, Ronan has hit a few bumps in terms of film quality. The good certainly outweighs the bad but we’re here to look at both sides. Using the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, we’re listing the best and worst movies of Saoirse Ronan’s career.

10 Worst: Lost River (31%)

Saoirse Ronan’s 5 Best Movies (& 5 Worst) According To Rotten Tomatoes

This 2014 film is notable for being the first directed and written by Ryan Gosling. The talented actor got to work with an impressive cast including Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith, and more. The story focused on a single mom who was pulled into a dark underworld.

The lackluster score on Rotten Tomatoes seemed to stem from the plot not being all that strong. Gosling was praised as director and the acting was solid but not everything came together the way you’d hope given the immense talent involved. Fans weren’t too interested either, as this holds a 38% score from audiences.

9 Best: Loving Vincent (86%)

Stories about famous artist Vincent van Gogh and his work aren’t anything new. However, this 2017 release was easily the most unique. That’s because it was the first animated film to be fully painted. Yes, that means that each of the 65,000 frames was made as an oil painting on a canvas.

It was painstaking work meant to mimic the way van Gogh himself worked. In this widely praised film, Ronan portrayed Marguerite Gachet. While she and the rest of the cast performed well, the highlights of Loving Vincent are the style and the story being told.

8 Worst: Stockholm, Pennsylvania (27%)

Another case of a movie being the debut work for a writer/director. Here, it was Nikole Beckwith, who won a Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting in 2012 for Stockholm, Pennsylvania. It premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and told a harrowing story.

Ronan took on the lead role of Leanne Dargon, who was kidnapped as a kid and confined to a basement for 17 years. The film deals with her struggles with Stockholm syndrome after returning home and how it drives her biological mother to a breaking point. The acting and provocative script were praised but some found it convoluted at points.

7 Best: The Grand Budapest Hotel (91%)

Saoirse Ronan’s first film of 2020 will be The French Dispatch, which re-teams her with Wes Anderson. Their first project together was 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. It centered on the relationship between a concierge and a lobby boy at a famous hotel, who get caught up in a murder mystery.

Anderson’s trademark style was all over this film and people loved it for that reason. Ronan played Agatha, the lobby boy’s love interest. She shined along with the exquisite cast consisting of Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, and many others.

6 Worst: Violet & Daisy (22%)

Take Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel and put them together to play best friends who also happen to be hitmen. Sounds like a recipe for success, doesn’t it? Add in supporting roles for the likes of Tatiana Maslany, Danny Trejo, and the late James Gandolfini and you’ll wonder where this went wrong.

Alas, it was another case where most of the acting was given solid reviews but other aspects let this down. Some critics felt it was something of a Quentin Tarantino knockoff. Not only did this score low on Rotten Tomatoes but it also grossed a paltry $17,186 at the box office.

5 Best: Little Women (95%)

Saoirse Ronan’s 5 Best Movies (& 5 Worst) According To Rotten Tomatoes

The most recent film on this list is 2019’s Little Women. At first glance, you may feel this isn’t worth checking out because it is a story we’ve seen told dozens of times over the years. However, those versions didn’t have the two-hit combo of Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan.

This was their second collaboration and it marked another hit for Gerwig as both director and writer. It managed to bring us a fresh retelling of a classic. Ronan (who played Jo) was joined in the stellar cast by Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, and Florence Pugh, among others. Ronan secured her fourth Oscar nom for this, while Pugh scored her first.

4 Worst: Justin and the Knights of Valour (13%)

Our second trip into an animated Ronan feature is a far less successful one. Justin and the Knights of Valour was released in 2013 and centered around a boy in the Middle Ages who sought to be a knight. Ronan voiced the love interest of the protagonist.

This boasted a notable voice cast of Freddie Highmore, Charles Dance, Antonio Banderas, Mark Strong, and others. It only has 15 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes but most were clearly negative. While it looked good, it was seen to be predictable, unoriginal, and lacking in the comedy department.

3 Best: Brooklyn (97%)

This is kind of the movie that started a barrage of spectacular Saorise Ronan performances. 2015’s Brooklyn saw her play a young woman who emigrates from Ireland to New York City in the 1950s. This nabbed Ronan her first Oscar nomination since her inaugural one back in 2008.

Brooklyn was met with widespread acclaim, making plenty of “Top 10” lists for the year. The acting and screenplay got most of the love but the film was also praised as being a touching love story and a movie that made us feel like we were living in the ’50s. Starting with this, Ronan has been nominated for an Oscar every other year.

2 Worst: The Host (9%)

Stephanie Meyer’s name was pretty much everywhere in the late 2000s. She is the author of the hugely popular Twilight franchise. 2013’s The Host is based on another book written by her, focusing on a time when the human race is taken over by parasite like aliens.

Following her work in Atonement, The Lovely Bones, and Hanna, this kind of series felt like the next logical step for Ronan. Unfortunately, the film was met with poor reviews and ultimately flopped at the box office. Meyer had plans to turn the book into a trilogy but those fell through as well.

1 Best: Lady Bird (99%)

This is probably the film most associated with Saoirse Ronan’s career. It marked her first collaboration with Greta Gerwig and they knocked it out of the park. Ronan stars as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a girl preparing to leave high school and move away from Sacramento while dealing with the struggles of adolescence and a strained relationship with her mother.

While it earned Ronan another Oscar nod, it also scored her a Golden Globe win, while also taking home the prize for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy). Lady Bird felt like a coming out party for Gerwig and stars like Beanie Feldstein and Timothée Chalamet.
