It’s still unclear exactly how Spiral: From the Book of Saw ties into the prior films, but it’s time for John Kramer to be allowed to rest in peace. Tight continuity can sometimes be hard to come by with horror franchises. Sure, most manage to keep the same villain, and possibly some other characters or settings, but often producers and writers just seem to throw up their hands and hope fans don’t notice the glaring lack of logic between installments.

For example, Friday the 13th Part 8 ends with Jason being dissolved by toxic waste, while Jason Goes to Hell has him not only alive again but somehow sent back from Manhattan to Crystal Lake. Or elsewhere, almost all the Leprechaun sequels act that there’s never been a Leprechaun movie before them, making up their own rules for the titular bad guy. That’s not the case with the Saw series, which features arguably the most slavish devotion to maintaining continuity and avoiding retcons in the history of horror cinema.

Of course, Saw’s respect for continuity has been a double-edged sword. As the series expanded to include more and more films, explaining how and why the latest “game” tied back to the plans or disciples of the now long-dead John “Jigsaw” Kramer became harder and harder. It’s time for Spiral, aka Saw 9, to break free of that chain.

If co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell had anticipated Saw becoming a 15-year-plus franchise, it seems likely that they might have changed their minds about giving Jigsaw terminal cancer. But cancer he had, and by the end of Saw 3, John Kramer was dead. Yet, over the course of five additional Saw movies, Jigsaw has continued to pull the strings, and the longer that has continued, the harder and harder it’s become to accept as a viewer. Jigsaw was not a superhero – or supervillain for that matter – he was a mortal man, and no matter how smart he was, he wasn’t psychic.

While Spiral: From the Book of Saw should indeed acknowledge the franchise’s past, and perhaps even feature a flashback cameo by Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, it shouldn’t go the route of 2017’s Jigsaw, and feature yet another previously unknown apprentice able to further John’s work. Spiral’s killer needs to be someone new, someone not directly connected to Jigsaw, and someone not tied to all of John Kramer’s character baggage. Spiral, starring and executive produced by Chris Rock, has been billed as a reboot, and for the most part, that’s exactly what it needs to be. It’s time for a new generation of villain to get started playing their own game.
