The 1983 film Scarface is an iconic American tale of a man’s unshakeable pride and ambition gone wrong. Little do many know that over two decades later, a video game sequel, Scarface: The World Is Yours, would emerge to resurrect the film’s legacy and continue its rude, off-the-walls tone and style.

Currently the Canadian developer of Scarface: The World is Yours, Radical Entertainment, is best known for creating the Prototype series. But long before people played anti-hero as Alex Mercer, Radical had developed a multitude of solid titles, especially for systems like the PlayStation 2. Some of these, like The Simpsons: Road Rage and Crash Tag Team Racing were fairly well-known, but they had one more release which seemed to fly over the gaming community’s head. Despite the fact it flew under the radar, 2006’s Scarface: The World Is Yours was an incredibly creative continuation of Scarface’s story that managed to harness the film’s tone and transfer it into a complete gaming experience, a feat from which many games based on movies fall tragically short.

Possibly the greatest factor attributing to the movie’s successful re-imagining was the continuation of the incredibly iconic protagonist, Tony Montana. Tony’s presence in The World Is Yours would strike many as odd, given that the game is a sequel and (spoilers for a 30 year old movie) Tony received a near-lobotomy from the tender hands of a double-barreled shotgun at the end of the film. Shockingly, Radical opted to rewrite the film’s ending rather than simply adapting the film’s plot.

How Scarface’s Game Changed The Movie’s Ending

In the end, this gave them much more creative leeway while keeping many of the elements fans of Scarface loved most, mainly the in-your-face antics of Tony Montana as portrayed by Al Pacino. Pacino would not return to reprise his role as Tony for The World Is Yours, but he would lend his likeness and pick the actor who eventually did voice Tony in the game. In the end, players were able to wear the thousand-dollar loafers of their favorite cartel kingpin in a Grand Theft Auto-style open world.

It’s undeniable that Tony Montana makes up much of what fans love about Scarface, and that’s why Radical opted to inject as much of Tony’s raw attitude into the game as possible. Apart from repeating Tony’s rise to power and glory as depicted in the film, players are able to make Tony interact with the world in many ways that show off the Scarface character’s personality. Obviously, this includes murdering people and dealing hard drugs, but it also includes more subtle things like the dialogue Tony can initiate with any NPC in the game. It just wouldn’t be Scarface if fans couldn’t tell anyone and everyone “f*ck you” in his iconic voice.

That’s not to say murdering is not an important part of The World Is Yours, however. Just like any good GTA clone, this game contains many shooting segments. Even in the midst of a gunfight, Radical did not hesitate to let fans play Tony Montana. The better the player’s accuracy in combat, the more they fill Tony’s “Balls Meter.” That’s right, players can embody the very thing by which Tony defined himself: a man with balls. If the player fills Tony’s “Balls Meter,” they can enter “Intense Rage,” a mode in which they become invincible and gain infinite ammo. Basically, it allows them to play out combat scenarios in the same way Tony behaved during his climactic gunfight scene in the original film.

There is much more to what makes Scarface: The World Is Yours capture the original’s tone. The dialogue between characters is spot-on, and the music is that same bouncy, 80’s Miami sound that existed in the film. But in the end, Scarface is all about the man himself. Without Tony Montana, the series has no soul, and Radical managed to bring that in full force for their game.
