With their mutual dislike of people, sarcastic running commentary, and nihilistic attitudes, David Rose and Stevie Budd seem like they would be the perfect friends on Schitt’s Creek. The two misanthropes enjoy nothing more than commiserating over the sorry state of the denizens of Schitt’s Creek, the rural small town that Stevie was born in and David is forced to call home.

For all their friendly banter and good-natured henpecking, David and Stevie could have just as easily become bitter enemies. They both get enjoyment out of criticizing each other, they’re only too happy to pick out each other’s flaws, and they even went after the same man. Read on for 10 reasons why David and Stevie aren’t really friends at all.

10 THEY’RE CONSTANTLY JUDGING ONE ANOTHER

Form the very first moment David walked into the lobby of the Schitt’s Creek Motel and criticized Stevie’s outfit and the drapes in the same breath, it was clear that his relationship with its owner was going to be one of castigation.

And Stevie didn’t hold back, letting David know exactly what she thought of his penchant for designer duds (like leather sweaters in summer), his inability to find a local job, and his choice of men (at least, before Patrick).

9 THEY TRY TO CHANGE EACH OTHER

David can’t even kill an insect in his own room, and yet Stevie expects him to be able to kill a turkey at the annual turkey hunt? No matter what she does, David proves that he’s not going to be anyone but himself, fabulous matching camo ensemble and all.

When Stevie’s relatives show up for the funeral of one of their family members, David is disgusted by their unrefined ways and lets Stevie know it. He could have at least saved the barbarous words for after they left rather than during her time of mourning.

8 THEY INSULT EACH OTHER’S APPEARANCE

It’s apparent from the moment David lays eyes on Stevie sitting behind the check-in desk at the Schitt’s Creek Motel that he finds her frumpy bumpkin attire a tragedy. He makes the claim that she looks like the sort of person who would slip unsavory things into guests’ bed-linens.

Stevie is equally as unimpressed with David’s appearance, finding him to be a showboating urban peacock who spends more money on a single pair of his designer pants then she does on her car.

7 THEY STEAL EACH OTHER’S BOYFRIEND

Things get particularly awkward between Stevie and David in season 3 when they realize that they are both dating the same person in town. They decide to date like “enlightened human beings” and call themselves a “trouble,” sharing Jake at certain times.

Though they try to make it work, ultimately David can’t handle it, and Stevie continues to see Jake even though it makes David uncomfortable. Eventually, it doesn’t work out between her and Jake anyway, making Stevie’s behavior towards David all the more hurtful.

6 DAVID SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME WITH PATRICK

In the first three seasons, when not being irritated by his family and the rest of Schitt’s Creek, David spends a lot of his spare time with Stevie. That all changes when Patrick is introduced as David’s business partner, and finally a romantic partner.

Between planning their new business venture, Rose Apothecary, and doing domestic things with Patrick, David doesn’t have a lot of time to concentrate on Stevie. Since Patrick is involved with both his personal and public life, he gets the bulk of David’s attention.

5 STEVIE EMBARRASSED DAVID AT HIS JOB

After harassing David about having no life skills and insisting he would never find a job in Schitt’s Creek because nothing for trendy gallerists existed, Stevie embarrassed him at the only job he could find selling clothes at the Blouse Barn.

David was already mortified to work there, but it didn’t help matters when Stevie marched in and threatened to try on some of the store’s more suggestive clothing in front of his boss under the guise of having her “sister’s communion this weekend.”

4 DAVID EMBARRASSED HER ON HER DATE WITH EMIR

Stevie is as unlucky in love as David, but eventually, in season 4 she meets Emir Kaplan, an influential travel blogger whose review of the Rose Bud Motel could mean big business. The two embark on a long-distance relationship which is difficult enough without David ruining it.

Not only does David mercilessly tease Stevie about her “cell phone boyfriend,” but one night while drunk he decides to sing karaoke dedicated to “the lovers.” It mortifies Stevie and she tries to hustle Emir out of the bar before David can finish his song.

3 THEIR BUSINESSES TAKE UP ALL OF THEIR TIME

After season 3, when Stevie and Johnny become co-owners of the Rose Bud Motel, they become involved in all sorts of motel related adventures, including schmoozing investors, potential guests, and local politicians.

When David and Patrick start Rose Apothecary, they’re inundated with selecting and testing inventory, making sure local vagrants don’t make off with expensive bath salts and trying to keep their personal life and professional life from canceling each other out.

2 STEVIE TALKS ABOUT DAVID BEHIND HIS BACK

By season 4, David and Patrick’s store is a staple of Schitt’s Creek, known for its lip balm, trendy sand, and stone motif. Stevie spends time there chatting with Patrick about all the ways that David is a detriment to the store, and continues even when he walks in on them directly.

Stevie and Patrick proceed to gang up on David about the fact that he never compromises. When David extends an olive branch to Stevie by suggesting she accompany him to pick up some product and smooth things over, she declines in favor of staying with Patrick to continue to discuss David’s shortcomings.

1 SHE WASN’T HELPFUL DURING THE ROBBERY

No sooner had David and Patrick gotten Rose Apothecary up and running in Schitt’s Creek then it got held up in a robbery. Not only did the vagrant want cash, but he also wanted to steal some of the stores’ products, much to David’s dismay.

Stevie’s normal bravado and resourcefulness eluded her, and her response to the robber’s abduction of several bottles of wine was to suggest a pairing of cheese. David was horrified to realize she had picked then to become a sales associate who upsells.
