Dan Levy has joked that the line “Ew, David” from Schitt’s Creek will haunt him forever. Levy, who played David Rose in the CBC comedy, co-wrote and co-starred in the show opposite his father Eugene Levy, while his real-life sister Sarah Levy played Café owner Twyla. Schitt’s Creek also starred veteran actress Catherine O’Hara as former soap star and matriarch to the Rose family, Moira, as well as Annie Murphy as David’s namedropping sister, Alexis. Schitt’s Creek’s popularity was exhibited at last year’s Emmy’s, where the show swept the award ceremony, finishing with seven wins in total.

Schitt’s Creek follows the wealthy Rose family who, after losing their fortune, move to the family’s only remaining asset: a remote town called Schitt’s Creek, which family patriarch Johnny once bought as a joke gift for son David. The once-privileged Rose family are forced to adjust to living in a motel alongside an assortment of eccentric locals. A testament to excellent writing and acting, each character in Schitt’s Creek demonstrates genuine growth over the shows six season’s, and watching the Rose family flourish has left fans heart-warmed and hungry for more.

Now, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Levy has joked that “Ew, David” will haunt him forever. The line, said by Alexis to David only twice over Schitt’s Creek’s six seasons, has become something of a catchphrase for the show. Despite its popularity, Levy went on to say “Ew” isn’t something he wanted quoted at him by fans.

“It’s resulted in a sort of tagline that I think will haunt me for the rest of my life … ‘Ew’ is not necessarily something you want screamed at you in your most vulnerable time.”

While perhaps not favoring the use of the word “Ew” when fans approach him, Levy admires his fans and his work on the show, going on in the interview to show scarily accurate Halloween costumes that fans have recreated based on the show’s characters. Regarding the costumes, the co-created said, “If you dress people kind of the same for long enough, maybe if people end up watching your show, they will try to emulate that in a Halloween setting.” Being honored by fans in such a way seems to be viewed as a privilege by Levy, and it goes to show the impact that Schitt’s Creek has had in a relatively short run. To solidify its success, the show will also be immortalized in Monopoly form in a recently announced set based on the show’s town and characters.

Despite no current plans to return to Schitt’s Creek, Levy has said that a film is the most likely way the show will make a comeback, if it ever does. Murphy has also admitted she’d be “over the moon” with a Schitt’s Creek movie, sending Levy a daily bribe to encourage him to bring the series back. But, while Schitt’s Creek is still on Murphy’s mind, she’s currently busy with her dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself, and many of the other shows stars are also working on other projects. Levy himself recently signed a deal with Netflix to write and produce original content, so despite an all-round desire for a return, the chances of seeing new Schitt’s Creek soon is, unfortunately, looking unlikely for now. In the meantime, fans can delight themselves by re-watching the countless “Ew, David” compilations available online.
