Get ready, eager young students of magic, to enroll in the Scholomance Academy as the next expansion for Hearthstone has been officially announced. Set to release in early August, 135 new cards will be added with several new keywords, including Spellburst, Studies, and for the first time ever, Dual-Class cards.That last part is only technically correct, however, as tri-class cards are similar in concept and featured in Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, first released in December of 2016. On the other hand, these dual-class cards were clearly made to synergize with two combined class identities. As seen below, “Wand Thief” features discovery of mage spells and also the Combo keyword and is not surprisingly a card that can be used by either the Mage or Rogue class. In total, the ten class combinations are:
- Druid/Hunter
- Hunter/Demon Hunter
- Demon Hunter/Warlock
- Warlock/Priest
- Priest/Paladin
- Paladin/Warrior
- Warrior/Rogue
- Rogue/Mage
- Mage/Shaman
- Shaman/Druid
- New Keywords: Spellburst and Studies
Working with the theme of magic at Scholomance, spells are at the core of both new keywords. Spellburst is a keyword that will be on both minions and weapons, and when either are in play, casting a spell will trigger a one-time effect corresponding to the text on the card.
Studies meanwhile will allow players to Discover a card and reduce the cost of the next card played of the same type. Note that this applies to any card of the same type, and not only the Discovered card.
New Game Mode? We’re Still Waiting
Scholomance Academy looks great so far, both in its new keywords and dual-class cards, but without a doubt the most exciting news has yet to be announced. A new game mode remains listed as part of Phase Two of this Year of the Phoenix, but it seems that Blizzard is not yet ready to reveal what that might be.
Pre-Purchase Bundles
As always, there are two bundles to choose from as part of a pre-order. The first bundle features fifty-five Scholomance Academy card packs, as well as the Kel’Thuzad card back and a random Golden Legendary from the new set.
The Mega Bundle offers players eighty-five card packs, and fir the first time ever, five of those will be Golden Scholomance Academy packs. The same card back and Golden Legendary card is available, as well as the Kel’Thuzad Mage Hero and a Tavern Pass with four Arena tickets.
Log In For Free Cards
Lastly, patch 17.6 is live today and players can log in to receive two copies of “Transfer Student”, which is sure to be an interesting card with text that reads “This has different effects based on which game board you’re on.” Talk about mysterious!
