MTV’s Scream is officially returning for season 3, with a new trailer announcing its July release on new home, VH1. Written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Nightmare on Elm Street’s Wes Craven, the original Scream first hit theaters in 1996. Hilariously sending up and subverting the slasher genre with a self-aware tone, the film opened to critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. Over the weeks, however, it managed to increase upon its box office returns, turning it into a bonafide hit. Starring Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox, the original Scream ultimately spawned two immediate sequels and a belated fourth installment a decade later.

The Scream franchise then made a jump to television. Commissioned by MTV, the Scream television series explores an original story with brand-new characters. Starring Willa Fitzgerald, the series introduces viewers to the town of Lakewood and the legend of Brandon James – a masked killer who once seemingly terrorized the town. As a gang of friends begin to be picked off one by one by a copycat killer, the ever-dwindling survivors attempt to unlock the secrets of the town. Though the show attempted to maintain the film franchise’s self-awareness to horror tropes, it bore little resemblance to the films, with the killer(s) even wearing a different mask than the traditional Ghostface.

After two seasons, however, MTV has announced that season 3 would be a fresh reboot. Helmed by The Vampire Diaries’ Brett Matthews, Scream season 3 will feature a new setting and follow different characters and air on new network, VH1. The season 3 trailer offers fans their first look at actual footage of the new season, now officially called Scream: Resurrection. Considering it’s the first look, it’s extremely minimal, but it does reveal that season 3 will have the killer wearing the original Ghostface mask and and voice similar to that from the film series. Most notably, this trailer introduces Paris Jackson, seemingly the frontrunner for the character who will be killed off in the show’s opening, as per the tradition of Scream. The first episodes of season 3 will premiere on July 8 and the subsequent episodes will air on the following nights in two-hour blocks. It had previously been confirmed that season 3 would star Mary J. Blige (The Umbrella Academy), Keke Palmer (Scream Queens), and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf). Additionally, it was established that Queen Latifah would serve as an executive producer. The jump from MTV to VH1, however, is a new though unsurprising move. As is the decision to air the episodes as an event over consecutive nights rather than week to week. That style of release was recently adopted by the TV adaptation of another darkly comedic favorite: Heathers.

Since it was announced in 2017, little has been mentioned regarding Scream season 3. Despite Queen Latifah insisting that it was still happening, fans were beginning to lose faith. Though there are many who would prefer to see Scream 5 hit the big screen, there others who think the installments don’t count without the involvement of Williamson and Craven, who passed away in 2015. The series wasn’t without its fans, though, especially via Netflix, which aired the episodes internationally. Despite the reboot, some remained eager to see the show return, whatever the form. Now that it’s here, the debate will no doubt rage once again. The trailer certainly seems to lack the level of meta-awareness the films were known for. Then again, with Matthews – who has worked alongside Williamson – serving as showrunner, there is a good chance the series can still live up to the film’s legacy.
