The quirky and jolly pirate simulator Sea of Thieves will soon be coming to Steam. Released exclusively for Xbox One and Windows and developed by Rare, the open ocean multiplayer title was a flagship title for Xbox Games Pass, an initiative from Microsoft to lean towards a subscription service model, even for new releases. While Sea of Thieves was met with mixed reviews at launch, subsequent patches and content updates have livened up the game to a significant degree, adding new adventures for players to enjoy with their friends.

Now, Sea of Thieves is preparing to get a further influx of new players through an upcoming release on Steam. Though no release date was given, an Xbox Wire update announced that the Rare title will be released “soon” on Valve’s digital distribution network. The game can already be wishlisted by users, and the Steam version of Sea of Thieves will support full crossplay with the Windows and Xbox versions, allowing pirates to plunder together regardless of platform.

The game’s creators, Rare, are one of the longest-running developers in the industry. The British developers’ earliest titles date back to the ZX Spectrum and other similar home computers, though they came to prominence with Nintendo games like Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye 007, and Banjo-Kazooie. In 2002, the company was acquired by Microsoft, and they’ve been developing titles for the Xbox series of consoles ever since. Nearly their entire catalog, although not Sea of Thieves, can be played via Rare Replay, an Xbox One title that compiles 30 games from the company’s storied history.
