Rare has teased an exciting new Sea of Thieves update that will soon allow players to bury their treasure, introducing another feature to keep fans entertained. The game has seen an increase in popularity in 2021, in part thanks to its Pirates of the Caribbean collaboration, with Sea of Thieves celebrating 25 million unique players in October. Season 4 played a big part in the title’s renewed success, introducing more players to the Seven Seas with a wide range of new features. While swashbucklers prepare for the upcoming Season 5 release on December 2, Rare has been busy teasing features that will be introduced in the next big update.

Sea of Thieves Season 4 launched in late September, bringing Shrines and sunken treasure to the massive open world. The update allowed players to fully explore the Sunken Kingdom, tasking them with finding six Siren Shrines, solving challenging puzzles, and locating long-forgotten treasure beneath the sea. Sea of Thieves’ Season 4 update added plenty of dangers such as Ocean Crawlers, while simultaneously adding fresh new rewards for adventurous pirates, including Coral treasures. The Pirate Emporium was also stocked with the Golden Nile Ship Collection and new limited-time events were announced for the Season ahead.

Over on Twitter, Rare hinted that Sea of Thieves players will be able to bury their treasure as part of the Season 5 update, sharing the news with a teaser video (via Game Rant). The developer posted a clip showing two pirates burying treasure with the accompanying message: “Maybe we can teach old sea dogs new tricks…” The video starts from afar, slowly panning past a docked pirate ship and shore occupied by palm trees, until it zooms into the pirate duo committing their deed. The pirates look excited to bury their well-earned Sea of Thieves gold, though it isn’t clear exactly why the buccaneers are doing away with their booty.

Uncovering lost treasure has always been a major part of Sea of Thieves, but burying booty has been a feature absent from the game so far. While there have been thousands of treasure maps with X’s marking the spot, there has never much explanation as to how so many chests were hidden beneath the sand. It’s unclear how Rare will introduce this new feature, though it’s possible the game will encourage players to leave their loot behind with some sort of progression system. It’s also likely the feature will have players creating challenges for each other, leaving behind treasure in dangerous locations for others players to dig up.

Rare has so far been quiet about the upcoming Season 5 launch, though it’s safe to assume a hefty update is incoming. Sea of Thieves Season 4 had sea-expanding features upon release, so Season 5 will likely have its own accompanying patch with a host of new content for players to explore. The mystery surrounding Season 5 is set to continue for at least a few more days, though with the update nearly here, players won’t have long to wait.
