New details have surfaced surrounding the tragic accident that took place on the set of Rust last week, which resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Tragedy struck last week on the set of Rust when a crew member was accidentally killed, and another was seriously injured due to a prop gun going off. The gun was fired by Rust’s lead Alec Baldwin. The round killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and left director Joel Souza in the hospital.

A search warrant, the details of which were reported by the LA Times, has revealed additional information as to why and how the accident happened. According to the warrant, Baldwin was practicing removing the revolver during rehearsal, and the firearm went off unexpectedly. The warrant also notes Souza heard a whip and a loud pop before he was hit.

The firearm was handled by three people: Rust’s armorer Hannah Guiterrez Reed, assistant director Dave Halls, and Baldwin. Three prop guns were left for Halls and Baldwin due to COVID-19 restrictions. Not knowing there were live rounds in the guns, Halls yelled “cold gun”, which means it does not contain any live rounds, as he handed it to Baldwin. The incident occurred shortly after that.

Camera operator Reid Russell told investigating officers that he recalls seeing a bloody Souza and hearing Hutchins say she couldn’t feel her legs after the gun went off. The cinematographer fell backward after the round hit her in the chest and was assisted to the ground. Two other crew members working on Rust revealed there were safety concerns surrounding firearms on set as recently as a week before the fatal incident occurred.

According to the crew members, less than a week before Hutchins was killed, a stunt person fired off two live rounds on set after being told the gun they were using was cold. This isn’t the first time someone has been killed by a mislabeled firearm being discharged on a movie set. In 1993, the son of Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, was shot and killed on the set of The Crow.
