Sega is reportedly planning a Sonic the Hedgehog concert for the 30th anniversary of the game, according to Total Licensing Australia. “Throughout 2021, Sega will be celebrating Sonic’s 30th anniversary with new game content, a music concert with special guests and a wide array of new licensing and merchandising partnerships,” the magazine revealed.
Released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, features the title character on a quest to defeat Dr. Robotnik, a scientist who has imprisoned animals in robots and stolen the powerful Chaos Emeralds. Developed after Sega requested a mascot character to compete with Nintendo’s mascot Mario, the success of the game helped Sega become a leading video game company during the fourth generation of consoles in the early 1990s.
Over 1.14 billion units of Sonic the Hedgehog have been sold and downloaded since the series debuted in 1991, according to the publisher. At SXSW Gaming 2019, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka announced that development on the next major Sonic the Hedgehog installment is in the works. In February, the first teaser trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, scheduled to debut on April 8, 2022, was released by Paramount Pictures. The first film grossed nearly $320 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Last month, Netflix announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog 3D animated series titled Sonic Prime. The series, which will premiere in 2022, is described as “a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse” rests in Sonic’s hands. The series is being developed by Wild Brain, which is responsible for the Carmen Sandiego series on Netflix and The Snoopy Show for Apple TV Plus, and Man of Action, known for its work on Ben 10, Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, and Mega Man: Fully Charged.
Numerous events and merchandising tie-ins are planned for Sonic’s anniversary, including a Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Running Sonic Funko Pop! Vinyl figure, which is currently available for pre-order online in the Sega Shop, as well as a Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia, a full-color hardcover retrospective encyclopedia, which includes every video game in the franchise, available on Amazon.
