For a show about nothing, Seinfeld has definitely managed to still be considered incredibly hilarious all of these years later. Watching Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld), George (Jason Alexander), Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and Kramer (Michael Richards) eat at their favorite diner, complain that everyone else is the worst, and generally get up to no good never gets old.

But even though we can turn on any episode of this sitcom and still laugh, it has to be pointed out that there are some scenes, episodes, and jokes that leave a lot to be desired. There are more than a few jokes that are a bit offensive today. Here are 10 jokes from Seinfeld that have aged poorly.

10 The Season 2 Pony Joke

In the second season episode “The Pony Remark,” Jerry has a little speech that is pretty offensive today. He’s at a dinner party with his parents and when he makes a joke that kids with ponies are the worst, his mom’s cousin Manya (Rozsika Halmos) gets really upset.

As it turns out, she’s from Poland and had a pony. Jerry says, “Who figures an immigrant’s going to have a pony? Do you know what the odds are on that? I mean, in all the pictures I saw of immigrants on boats coming into New York harbor, I never saw one of them sitting on a pony.” This isn’t a nice or cool thing to say.

9 When George Asks About Holland

In the season 9 premiere “The Butter Shave,” Jerry and George have a conversation about Holland, and George seems more than a little bit geographically challenged. He also sounds really offensive, making this another joke from Seinfeld that hasn’t aged well.

George asks, “What is Holland?” and when Jerry explains where it is, it turns out that George didn’t know that Holland and the Netherlands are the same thing. It’s hard not to cringe when George asks, “Then who are the Dutch?”

8 The Pilot Joke About Hugging

It’s always fun to watch Jerry and George talk about their love lives, whether they’re wondering how they can possibly understand the delicate art of dating or they’re considering settling down (for a brief minute). But there are times throughout the series’ nine seasons when the two characters go a bit too far.

In the pilot, the two pals are talking about hugging women, and it’s a bit creepy to watch. Jerry says, “Although what if it’s one of those hugs where the shoulders are touching, the hips are eight feet apart?” and George responds, “That’s so brutal, I hate that.” Why are they talking about this in such detail?

7 “The Chinese Woman”

It’s honestly hard to believe that the season six episode “The Chinese Woman” even aired. The main storyline is that Jerry assumes Donna Chang (Angela Dohrmann) is of Chinese background. He chats with her on the phone and thinks this way due to her last name.

Making these kinds of cultural assumptions is never cool, and it’s never funny, either. There must have been another storyline to put in its place, but instead, we got this joke that has definitely aged poorly.

6 Jerry’s Massage Therapist Girlfriend

The gang on Seinfeld has pretty bad luck when it comes to dating. But when Jerry dates a massage therapist (Jennifer Coolidge) in the season five episode “The Masseuse,” he feels he has the worst luck ever because she would rather not give him a massage.

This joke has aged poorly because it could be viewed as sexist. Instead of focusing on her as a person, Jerry becomes totally obsessed with wanting a massage, and this is all he can think about. This is a common theme in his love life.

5 Jerry’s Virgin Girlfriend

When Jerry dates a woman who has never had sex, he and the rest of his friends constantly refer to her as “the virgin” instead of her name. There are many things wrong with this particular Seinfeld joke. For one thing, it’s a shame that he shared something so private and personal with his friends.

For another, this woman has every right to make this decision for herself, and it’s something that Jerry should treat in a more respectful manner. He keeps talking about how he’s trying to make a move, which doesn’t put him in a very good light.

4 Jerry’s Joke In “The Checks”

The season eight episode “The Checks” has an incredibly problematic scene: Kramer has businessmen from Japan stay at his place and instead of actually giving them a legitimate bed or even the couch, he has them sleep in drawers. Yes. drawers.

Continuing with the theme of Jerry dating women and making sexist jokes about them… In the sixth season episode “The Gymnast,” Jerry is dating Katya (Elina Löwensohn), and Kramer makes a joke that is definitely offensive.

Kramer says, “Jerry, you stand on the threshold to the magical world of sensual delights that most men dare not dream of.” It would be great if people could stop making jokes about women being “flexible.” It can be tough to stomach.

1 “Not that there’s anything wrong with that”

The infamous Seinfeld line “Not that there’s anything wrong with that” is considered a classic, but when we think about it, it’s a little problematic. In the season four episode “The Outing,” a journalist thinks that George and Jerry are gay and in a relationship. They’re very upset about this.

It’s tough to imagine this storyline airing on a show in 2019. If it did, it wouldn’t be a joke about how there’s nothing wrong with it — the characters would make a passionate speech about how everyone deserves respect.
