Fans of DC and Marvel always enjoy a good fight between powerful characters like Superman and Sentry. In 2000, Marvel created an insanely powerful superhero with the letter S on his costume, clearly mimicking the Last Son of Krypton, which originated in 1938. Both characters have undeniable similarities, including both powers and weaknesses. So who has what it takes to come out on top?

Sentry #8 by Paul Jenkins and John Romita Jr. reveals the truth behind Project: Sentry. The Golden Sentry Serum perfects the Super Soldier Serum in every way, granting the consumer the power of a million exploding suns. Robert Reynolds’ strength changes forever when he unknowingly drinks the serum. In World War Hulk #1, by Greg Pack and John Romita Jr., Tony Stark states that Sentry is the most powerful human being on Earth-616. This status means he has more power than Hercules, Captain Marvel, and the Thing. Sentry eventually battles Hulk in issue #5, and it ends in a perfect tie. Both Hulk and Sentry exhaust their powers to the point that they both revert to their human forms. If Hulk is “the strongest one there is,” Sentry is right there with him. However, Sentry also has an evil entity within him, the Void, making it difficult to control his strength.

Most comic fans know of Superman’s powers and weaknesses. Even if Clark Kent can fly at speeds faster than light, lift an infinite amount of weight, or wear a lead suit to resist kryptonite, he may have more weaknesses than any superhero. Beyond kryptonite, Clark can take damage from sensitive Kryptonian frequencies, red solar radiation, magic, and more. Even if it seems like all odds could potentially be against Superman, he also has years of experience. In All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Clark super-charges himself with a solar flare from the sun. Not only does his power seemingly become infinite, but he also gets a higher level of concentration, almost able to be at several places, doing several things at the same time.

It would be a close one in an actual fight. Both characters can potentially give each other a beating, but both can take one as well. While Sentry and Superman have several similar abilities, the main factor in this situation is control. The Man of Steel has far more willpower than Sentry, constantly triumphing over his weaknesses. In Action Comics #775, by Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke, Superman battles Manchester Black, who uses telepathic abilities against Clark. What makes Manchester Black an interesting antagonist is that he despises anybody with unshakable morals. Superman’s will is so immovable that he still triumphs against telepathic offenses, something he has no protective measures over.

Sentry, unlike Superman, is fragile to any mental stress, as it brings out the evil entity within him, the Void. The Void frequently attempts control over Sentry’s power, and it causes Robert to lose focus. Incidentally, Reed Richards and Tony Stark tend to erase the existence of Sentry from their universe to keep things easy for its inhabitants. While having some experience in expelling the Void away, Marvel’s Sentry just doesn’t have the same handle over his resolve as DC’s Superman, which gives an upper hand to the Man of Steel in most situations.
