Sex Education Sets Up A Future Without Moordale For Season 4 & Beyond

The coming-of-age show, Sex Education has set up seasons 4 and 5 without Moordale Secondary. Netflix’s teen series returned with season 3 after a slightly longer wait compared to its previous seasons. Despite this, it proved to be worth it with Sex Education season 3 receiving glowing reviews. As with its previous years, it chronicled the lives of the pupils and faculty staff at the British school as they dealt with the introduction of a new Headteacher, Hope Haddon (Jemima Kirke). However, while the focus remained very much on school life, the overall narrative actually set up the show for a move away from Moordale in the future.

Premiering in 2019, Sex Education became an instant hit for Netflix. While the series tackles the respective journeys of several characters, its primary player is Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), who unexpectedly teams up with Moordale’s often misunderstood student, Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) to run underground sex therapy sessions at school. Otis took care of the giving advice, while Maeve manned the business side of things. It has been quite a while since their operations were shut down, and in Sex Education season 3, it even barely played a role in the narrative.

Instead, Sex Education season 3 shifted its focus more on the individual arcs of the show’s characters. Haddon’s arrival effectively incorporated Moordale in the narrative as she tried rehabilitating the school’s image after it earned the nickname “sex school.” Because her guidelines were a little too strict, the students and staff had a difficult time keeping up with them without feeling oppressed. Beyond this, however, Sex Education season 3 didn’t have much to do with Moordale anymore. Instead, the show mainly centered on the intrapersonal dynamic among the cast. That included Otis starting a secret relationship with Ruby (Mimi Keene), which was eventually revealed to the public. Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) began openly dating Adam (Connor Swindells). Finally, Maeve dealt with family issues with her mom. Fans and critics seemed to love this trajection for the show, effectively offering Netflix the narrative opportunity to continue Sex Education with season 4 and season 5 even if the show’s main ensemble leaves Moordale – thereby sidelining the location that has been center-stage thus far.

Sex Education season 3 ended with Moordale being sold to an unknown buyer, with all the juniors and seniors forced to find other educational alternatives by the end of the term. But even they don’t end up coming back to the school anymore, the series can still have a great future. Depending on how Netflix paces its story, Sex Education season 4 can focus on the primary cast dealing with the ramifications of Moordale being sold while tackling their respective personal issues. It can show Otis coping with Maeve’s absence while getting used to being a big brother to Jean’s (Gillan Anderson) new baby. Meanwhile, Adam can come to terms with his break-up with Eric as he navigates his sexuality separate from him. The series can also follow Maeve as she begins her study stint in the U.S. There is simply a lot of narrative opportunities for Sex Education season 4 and beyond that don’t require the involvement of Moordale.

In any case, Sex Education’s best asset has always been its characters. Without Moordale, Netflix can shift its storytelling focus to the kids’ personal journeys. This could even be a more interesting approach since it could also show Otis and the rest of the cast grappling with the idea of an uncertain future.
