Shang-Chi star Simu Liu held an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit yesterday in the Marvel Studios subreddit. Here, he talked about the film, his love for basketball, and daddy issues.

What stands out – evident by all the awards and upvotes – is his answer to one fan who stated, “As a Hispanic dude, I am incredibly proud of you, especially with how you’re representing yourself and your fellow Asian brothers and sisters. I hope Kevin Feige is working on a Mexican superhero flick.”

“One thing that I hope comes out of the (hopeful) success of [Shang-Chi] is a realization that every community deserves to be represented in the superhero space,” Liu answered. “Superheroes represent the best of humanity, in strength of character and morality. They inspire hope and endless possibility. Once you see yourself reflected as that, you believe that anything is possible.”

As for how Liu aactually got the role: “Kevin wanted a genuine reaction of someone who was just deer-in-the-headlights shocked to be there, and that’s exactly what he got. It’s [absurd] that one moment, I’m at home in my Toronto condo in my underwear, and then I get a call and my whole life changes. Four days later, I get flown first class to San Diego and end up eating dinner across the table from Angelina Jolie, who very patiently put up with my attempts to explain League of Legends to her.”

Liu is also a huge basketball fan, something he doesn’t shy away from. “[I] still pretty much check r/nba on a daily basis to keep up with all things basketball,” he said. “Occasionally, [I] take my talents to r/CrochetPatterns to drop a little knowledge.” As for who Shang-Chi would support, he said that they would “cheer for the Warriors but the Raptors would win in six like they did in 2019.” He also threw out that he is the “master of daddy issues.” It’s a diverse AMA in terms of answers.

Liu also enbowed a little bit of inspirational advice to anybody in a hard place right now: “What kept me going in the tough times was truly this sense that I was the best version of myself when I was pursuing this work. I was a miserable student, and evne more miserable accountant. As an actor, I was self-motivated, hyper-engaged, and incredibly passionate. I knew that if I stayed the course, something good would happen. Best advice to someone just starting out? Build your roots. Don’t start down this journey alone. Find like-minded people and make them your community. Ask for helpo and guidance. Collaborate. Create. Don’t stay stagnant.”
