The legacy of Shenmue isn’t over quite yet. As promised during its Kickstarter campaign, Shenmue III will be receiving some DLC packs and its first one is right around the corner. Publisher Deep Silver has announced that the “Battle Rally” pack will be heading to Yu Suzuki’s belated sequel on January 21, 2020.

As the name implies, this DLC will see battles engaging in battles with other combatants. As the description reads, this add-on will offer “fresh gaming activities in a race unlike any other.” I guess protagonist Ryo got tired of walking around everywhere. In a cool move, this will be the first time that players will be able to control someone other than Ryo. Wuying Ren and Wei Zhen are mentioned, though I’m sure Shenhua will be unlockable.

“Battle Rally” will be available through the Epic Games Store and PlayStation Store for $8 when it releases. Anyone that grabbed the collector’s edition or complete DLC bundle won’t need to repurchase the content to access it. It will be included with your copy when the game is updated.

For fans that waited nearly 20 years for a continuation to Shenmue, I’m not sure this DLC pack is the most enticing thing. It does give one a chance to spend more time with Ryo and friends, but this is some superfluous content if I’ve ever seen it. I guess that means those without the season pass won’t feel like they are missing out, but this hardly feels like a good use of Ys Net’s resources.

At the same time, the dismal sales of Shenmue III could spell the end of the series. Shenmue has never been all that popular, but the immense hype surrounding the release of this third entry could have fooled anyone into believing this new entry would be a smash hit. At least creator Yu Suzuki is keeping his spirits up, vowing to never give up on the series regardless of how bad it might look.

If goofy content like this helps get Ys Net some money for an eventual Shenmue IV, then what’s the harm? At least fans will be able to experience something they truly like.
