Sherlock Holmes 3 seems to be the next project that Robert Downey Jr. will be working on, which means that we are finally getting a return to the surprising fan-favorite franchise. The blockbuster films about the British detective have been widely well-received.

While the film is highly anticipated, we’re not totally sure what to expect from the latest outing for Watson and Holmes. We’re therefore taking a look at 10 things that we want to see when the third film rolls around in 2021.

10 SURVIVAL EXPLANATION

We know that Sherlock survived his massive drop from the top of a waterfall from the last film but we’d love to know exactly how he did it. Sure there’s a breathing apparatus involved, but that doesn’t explain surviving the actual drop itself.

It’s sometimes said that not knowing is actually better and continues some kind of mystery around the character. However, we think it could play into the next film if we found out how he actually managed to survive falling from such a height.

9 MORIARTY RETURN

Moriarty is the classic villain that Sherlock faces off against. He’s had a role in the last two films, but we have to have him return at some point in the third. He doesn’t have to be a major villain, but it would be good to have him in a subplot.

The fact is, the two characters face off against each other in many book versions, films, TV series and perhaps even some murder mystery comics. To not have the duo battle one another in the final film would be a real shame.

8 MORE MYCROFT

Mycroft Holmes is a major part of the TV version of the stories of Sherlock Holmes. However, although he is played by the talented Stephen Fry, the character has been barely featured in the series thus far. We’d love to see a change in this.

Although he doesn’t have to be a key part of the plot, adding him to the team could be quite interesting. The dynamic between the brothers is always a hilarious one to watch and perhaps Mycroft could actually be of a little more help.

7 ABSURD MYSTERIES

The mysteries of the last two films have been a little wacky. The series kicked off with magic, cults and strange conundrums. We absolutely love to see this side of this universe explored and we really want to see a little more absurdity.

There’s plenty of Sherlock Holmes stories that lend themselves to the weird and wonderful. It could be giant hounds or perhaps more magic, but we’d like to see Sherlock face something supernatural before revealing it to not be as it seems.

6 CLASSIC TALES

There are some classic tales from the books that could be used in a future film. Sure, we’d love to see something original as well, but it’s great to see a twist on an old favorite. This version of the Sherlock Holmes world would certainly help to mix things up.

Although aspects of these tales are pretty close to the books, others are much further away. We think that taking one of the best Sherlock stories and writing it to fit with this characterization would make the third film far more entertaining.

5 MORE INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

The first film felt like it was very London based before the second one moved us further afield. We’d love for the third movie to go completely international, perhaps to a location, we would never have expected. Europe would be interesting of course.

However, something away from the continent could be even more exciting. There’s plenty of possibilities during this time period, although films often ignore the historical context in favor of storytelling. Somewhere in the Asia-Pacific region would be brilliant.

4 SIGNIFICANT DEATH

The stakes of these films have been pretty mixed. Although Irene Adler supposedly died during the second film, it’s likely that this was actually a fake-out. Sherlock’s own death was also ret-conned pretty quickly into the final act of that film.

This new movie has to have a significant death that shows us that the stakes are very real. The biggest person to kill off would be Watson, which could be a big twist for the movie. However, the most likely option they will go with is Mycroft.

3 COMPELLING ACTION

The action of the last film was a huge step up from the first. However, we love the slow-motion combat that has been used and the way in which Holmes calculates his every move. There’s something really unique about this concept.

It still holds the wow factor but has to be used in more innovative ways. We’d love to see it on a larger scale and see Holmes copes in a conflict where his back is truly up against the wall. Or more importantly, how he copes when these abilities have been removed.

2 MAJOR BETRAYAL

We were always expecting someone close to Sherlock to betray him. Irene Adler always toed the line, even working with Moriarty for a time. However, there was no surprise twist that we were expecting. It would make for a compelling plot for this to happen.

Watson’s wife, Mary, would be the perfect choice for this, as we’ve seen it done previously but this could be an opportunity to develop the idea further. There are other options including Mycroft, or perhaps a new character to the series.

1 CONCLUSION

We’re hoping that this film has a satisfying conclusion that wraps up this trilogy neatly. We can’t imagine any more films following on from this unless the movie is an even bigger box office hit than first expected.

We know that Robert Downey Jr. has been perfect in this role, so it would be nice to get a strong finish from this franchise; one that feels like Sherlock can carry on solving mysteries into the far future, in a happily ever after scenario.
