Shin Megami Tensei 5 allows you to have up to three demons in your party to fight alongside you and help you out in battle. You’ll want to ensure the demons you choose are good and that your party strikes a balance, offering a range of useful skills, elemental attacks, and more.

So how do you get the perfect demon party? Well, first of all, you need to start recruiting various fiends by negotiating with them in battle. However, eventually, you’ll unlock the ability to fuse demons — which allows you to combine more than one demon to create a brand new one. Here’s everything you need to know.

When Do You Unlock Demon Fusion?

Once you have progressed through the storyline enough to have defeated the first abscess, you will unlock Demon Fusion and the Demon Compendium the next time you access the World of Shadows. This will add new options to the World of Shadows menu that can be accessed from any leyline fount.

How Do You Fuse Demons?

Demon Fusion requires two or more demons that you fuse together to create an entirely new one. Any demons you use in the fusion will be lost. When you fuse demons, you can choose which skills will be inherited from the fusion, though some skills cannot be inherited. Fusion is a great way to create more powerful demons to use in your party. The stronger the demons you fuse together, the stronger the demon that you get as a result.

You cannot fuse two demons if the resulting demon will be at a higher level than yourself. The only exception to this is that sometimes a higher-level demon can result from a fusion accident. Additionally, some fusions cannot occur until you have progressed to a certain point in the storyline or have completed specific subquests.

Fusion accidents are when the resulting demon is not the one you were expecting and is more likely to happen during a full moon.

There are four types of fusion available:

What is the Demon Compendium?

The Demon Compendium keeps track of all demons you have ever possessed, which means if you ever get rid of a demon or lose it due to a fusion, you can summon it back for a cost. The stronger the demon you wish to summon, the more Macca it will cost you.

Additionally, though the compendium registers the demon in the state it was when you first received it, you can manually register your demons in the compendium again to overwrite the state they are stored to that of their higher-leveled version That means if you need to fuse it, you can summon it back exactly as it was, but it will cost you.
