One thing we can say for certain is that, whatever PlayStation’s reasoning, Nintendo and Microsoft wasted zero time in reminding the world that, yes, E3 2019 is very much going to be a thing for them.

The gaming industry does like throwing its curveballs, doesn’t it? Just when you think you’ve got some semblance of routine in this wacky world of, PlayStation rocks up and hits us with the revelation that they won’t be attending next year’s E3.

As we reported just yesterday, Sony stated to Game Informer, “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019.”

The internet is still deciding what to make of this whole thing, with responses ranging from outraged snark/snarky outrage to understanding and general indifference. Is it just a face-saving thing, in lieu of admitting that they don’t really have much more first-party big-ticket items in the pipeline just now? Surely there’s an element of that, with how thoroughly they’ve shot their bolt this year with games of the caliber of God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

As Eurogamer reports, Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime was quick to voice his support of next year’s show, the first in E3 history that Sony won’t be playing a part in. “E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe,” he said. “Every year, we discuss what will be the best way for us to take advantage of the next E3 show in order to bring smiles to people’s faces.”

For the last few years, Nintendo has opted for pre-recorded Directs at E3 rather than in-person announcements, but they’ve saved their biggest news for the show regardless. Everyone who saw their 45-minute Super Smash Bros. Ultimate extravaganza this year can vouch for that.

As for Xbox, the response was a little snarkier and no more subtle. Xbox bigwig Phil Spencer responded to PlayStation’s news by proudly stating on Twitter that his company has, “A lot to share with fans at E3 2019,” adding that it’s “always a high point of the year to witness the industry’s creativity and the energy of the community.”

The official Xbox account itself had zero time for that sort of subtlety and nuance, simply dropping this statement:

So there it is. It’s important to note that nobody’s being directly hostile here (individual commenters aside; you know what a friendly place the internet often is), and the ‘big three’ is known to engage in this sort of friendly banter. Still, there’s more than a hint of one-upmanship about this.
