Show Me What You Got: 5 Weird Talents Rick & Morty’s Rick Has (& 5 Morty Has)

There’s no denying Rick Sanchez’s intellect, but his talents stretched out into the uncanny valley. And the same can be said about his grandson Morty!

Though the beloved raunchy, sci-fi adventure is not even halfway over, Rick and his pal Morty have already done and proven a lot over their last four seasons. Rick Sanchez is obviously the man of many talents. He’s an intergalactic criminal, the universe’s smartest man, and has gotten into way more “anime” fights than Jerry Smith could care for.

Morty on the other, hopefully washed hand, is infamously not so versatile. Literally brought to Rick’s side due to his stupidity and incompetence acting as a cloaking device, Morty is just a normal guy at his best and pretty close to Jerry at his worst. Despite this, the juvenile sidekick and his mentor still have a few talents that could surprise fans.

10 Rick: Drinking & Inventing

Drinking and handling heavy machinery (or doing anything) should not be condoned by any means. It’s dangerous, irresponsible, and just puts people’s worst selves in the worst situations. With that being said, Rick has gotten pretty good at it. With the self-proclaimed “hardest-working liver in the galaxy,” Rick Sanchez has become an oddly competent person when drunk.

It’s not as if his family and friends don’t prefer him sober, but drunk Rick is still oddly capable at amazing and horrifying things. Some classic examples include the time that he built a bomb while hammered in the pilot or the time that a late-night bender had him Saw the universe’s best superheroes.

9 Morty: Surviving In The Wild

It makes sense that, after spending so much time with Rick, Morty would eventually pick up a few things to help himself die less. One would think that seeing their own dead body would make them try harder to live. In Morty’s case, he proved himself to be quite the talented yet regrettable survivalist in “The Ricks Must Be Crazy.”

When Rick somehow gets the two of them stuck in the miniature universe within his car engine, Morty is forced to survive on his own and become the leader of a budding, tribal civilization when Rick gets preoccupied competing with Stephen Colbert as an alien. For a kid who barely goes to school, this is pretty impressive.

8 Rick: Making Up Dance Routines

Though geniuses and nerds are not well-known for their dance moves, Rick Sanchez gets to break the curve once again by bringing together intellect and funk. In “Ricksy Business,” Rick manages to round up his entire party in the coveted Rick Dance. In “Big Trouble In Little Sanchez,” Tiny Rick busts a move once again to teach Morty and Summer’s school the “Ooh Let Me Out.”

And, of course, one can’t forget Rick’s sick moves from “Get Schwifty,” where he combines his dulcet tones with some exceptional choreography. Ricky truly is a force to be reckoned on both the battlefield and the dance floor.

7 Morty: Knowledge Of Krootabulan Culture

While the pilot may have initially led fans to believe that Morty wasn’t actually absorbing knowledge from Rick, the later seasons certainly beg to differ. Though he’s not exactly rising up through the school, Morty is becoming much more accustomed to the rules and cultures of outer space. One of the best examples of this is when he shows some surprising expertise on Krootabulan culture in “The ABC’s of Beth.”

He’s able to advise his dad on the dangers of dating his then-girlfriend, Kiara, and seemed to know a little bit of the Krootabulan language or, at least, enough to greet Kiara. It’s easy to assume that he must’ve taken to other alien cultures and languages as well.

6 Rick: Making Up Pop Songs

It’s easy to forget, but Rick was once part of an intergalactic rock band alongside Birdperson and Squanchy during their younger years. Even though he doesn’t really carry around the bass guitar anymore, Rick’s affinity for music can still be heard across the series. “Get Schwifty” is the most obvious example of Rick just being able to bust out a planet-saving beat on the spot.

He also busts out another funky beat in “Big Trouble In Little Sanchez,” though that episode has a much better example of his range with Tiny Rick’s sad song. He’s also collaborated with rapper-turned-YouTuber Logic, so that’s pretty neat, too.

5 Morty: Sewing Snake Costumes

Sewing is a noble craft that often goes underappreciated, yet it is somehow embraced by the youngest Smith. In “Rattlestar Ricklactica,” Rick has to invent time travel for a society of intelligent snakes and must put himself on a sort of time loop to accomplish it.

This involves him and Morty having to rescue their past selves while their past selves must work on not only inventing time travel to bring back to the past but must also prepare some decent snake costumes. While Rick was obviously busy working on time travel, Morty was oddly enough in charge of sewing the two some disguises. Given that he probably could’ve asked anyone else in the house for some help, it seems that Morty is the Smith’s resident seamster.

4 Rick: Going Off The Grid In Roy

In “Mortynight Run,” Rick introduces Morty to the wonderful world that is Blips and Chitz and, more importantly, introduces him to the hyper-realistic, virtual reality game, Roy. Seeing Morty assume the entire life of another man was pretty mind-bending; but given Rick’s reaction, he apparently didn’t do the best run of the game.

By contrast, Rick is apparently pretty skilled at living Roy’s life, as he’s not only able to play without having Roy depend on the grid but was able to attract an entire crowd to his game. Now that’s a pro-gamer move right there.

3 Morty: Screenwriting

While Rick and, by extension, creator Dan Harmon spent over 20 minutes in “One Crew Over the Crewcoo’s Morty” explaining why the heist movie concept is played out, one shouldn’t let that spoil Morty’s efforts over the episode. Throughout the episode and for some time prior, Morty had apparently been working on his own screenplay to pitch to Netflix. And, as it turns out, Netflix was interested.

While many like to joke about how easy it is to get a series or film on Netflix, Morty showed some initiative and talent in this episode to be able to talk with some agents.

2 Rick: Conscious Choice Throughout Time

It makes sense that the smartest man in the universe wouldn’t have any trouble with making decisions, but Rick’s level of conviction and choice can not be understated. In “A Rickle In Time,” Rick got to prove how smart and decisive he was when his split, timeline selves being able to act in unison.

Though Summer and Morty would eventually get on his nerves, this is an ability that plenty of people would like to have. While having to work through a split timeline isn’t exactly an everyday problem, many people do struggle with indecisiveness and the regrets that come with it.

1 Morty: Turning Into A Car

This doesn’t really come up often, and Rick may have very well reversed the procedure; but unless Rick or the creators officially announce it, Morty Smith should still be able to transform into a car. He’s clearly not able to do so consciously, and there are apparently still some hiccups in the program.

However, the ability to shift one’s entire molecular makeup to become an anthropomorphized car is still a sight to behold. If Morty had better and more convenient control over it, going Transformers would be a pretty neat skill to have and would likely help him and Rick out of plenty of situations.
