Now, the impact that COVID-19 has had on our daily lives is incredible. The human toll is tragically mounting, all kinds of industries have taken a heavy hit… life is almost unrecognizable from the way it was just a few short weeks ago. For so many of us confined to our homes, video games have proven to be a real lifeline.
The industry has fought back against the virus in all kinds of ways, from charity tournaments to raise much-needed funds to crucial gestures from companies big and small. Nintendo of America recently donated 9,500 N95 masks to the hardest-hit local areas, for instance, while some publishers and developers are offering particular titles for free as part of their commitment to keeping gamers home safe playing.
While all of this is going on, however, the industry continues to suffer as a result of the pandemic. Some of the biggest gaming events, such as the mighty E3, have had to be cancelled or postponed in the interests of keeping the community safe. Overwatch League play has also made a hefty adjustment: rather than matches being broadcasted on Twitch as before, they’re now available to watch on YouTube. However, this left fans with one question: how do we earn our tokens now?
Tokens, for the uninitiated, are a separate in-game Overwatch currency, which is usable only in the League section. They’re used to redeem exclusive skins, which allow players to deck out their favorite heroes in their favorite team’s colors. They’re only obtained by watching said League or with real-life cash, and fans were only left with the latter option as a result of the change. Thankfully, though, they’ve now been tossed a lifeline.
That’s right. By signing up to the Overwatch League mailing list (or verifying your information if you’ve already done so), you’ll earn 100 tokens. You have to do this by April 29 and will have until the end of May to spend those tokens. There you are then, Overwatch fans: while you’re waiting for Echo to drop (on April 14), you’d better get to it!
