The Sims 4 has had one of its best years ever, topping previous years’ records with excellent numbers this quarter, and counting more than 30 million players active in the game. Updates and item packs allow players to continuously have new experiences in The Sims 4, with customization options and new characters to interact with. Players can embrace the island life, spend some time as a vampire, or even invest in a laundry stuff pack if their heart desires. The game is intended to allow players to live the life they want in a virtual space, and the variety of skin tones and hairstyles in the character creator should reflect the actual diversity of the Sims players and community.

Lyndsay Pearson, executive producer for The Sims 4, recently acknowledged the outcry from the Sims 4 community regarding the lack of authentic representation, specifically when it comes to dark skin tones. Players have been airing concerns about the options for dark complexions, which have been called “ashy” and low-quality. In the video, Pearson indicated that The Sims 4 updates will incorporate input from outside resources, and that the community will receive transparency as the update process goes on. Pearson acknowledged the work fan-made mods have done to try to create a more realistically diverse Sims world and noted that the updates will include both fixes to the current skin tones and brand-new options.

Outcry about the lack of representative diversity in the Sims character creation is not new, though it has seen a resurgence in the recent increase in visibility of the Black Lives Matter movement. In replies to Pearson’s Twitter video, Sims players referenced the work done by mods and community members like Xmiramira and EbonixSims to bring these issues to the forefront. They were some of the first to raise questions about the poor treatment of Black characters in the Sims games, and hopefully their commentary will be taken into account with the updates.

EA isn’t the only game studio to come under scrutiny for its lack of representation recently. Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast released a statement this June regarding upcoming design changes to help promote diversity in its products, and noted that it will be working with sensitivity readers and hiring more diverse staff, which is a push in the right direction if it manages to follow through on those points. That EA has taken this long to react to fan complaints despite having ample resources at its disposal is troubling, but hopefully the increase in public interest will produce satisfying results this fall.
