The Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim is a group of skilled assassins that you can join as you explore the world. While you complete the questline for the Dark Brotherhood, you will also be able to complete a variety of side quests, including Delayed Burial.
Delayed Burial is a side quest where you must decide the future of Cicero, a fellow member of the Dark Brotherhood. In this guide, we are going to go over how to complete this quest, as well as what you should do with Cicero. First, let’s take a quick look at how to accept this quest.
Accepting Delayed Burial
Although Delayed Burial is a side quest for the Dark Brotherhood, there are no prerequisites that you need to complete beforehand.
To start this quest, you will need to head to Loreius Farm, which is located north of Whiterun. To get here, just follow the road to the right of Whiterun that leads north. The farm will be directly off the path and should be easy to spot.
Conflicting Dark Brotherhood Quests
The next quest after Delayed Burial is Innocence Lost, however, you do not have to finish Delayed Burial to start this next quest.
Additionally, Delayed Burial will become unavailable after you complete part of With Friends Like These.
Lastly, Delayed Burial will fail if you do the following:
- Enter the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary
- Start Destroy the Dark Brotherhood quest
Delayed Burial is a minor quest, so if it is incomplete or failed, the story will still remain the same. If you would like to complete all the quests above, we recommend working on one Dark Brotherhood quest at a time, starting with Delayed Burial.
Speaking With Cicero
As you make your way to Loreius Farm, you will encounter Cicero along the road. Upon talking with him, you learn that his wagon, which carried the remains of his ‘mother’, has broken down.
Cicero tells you that he asked Vantus Loreius for help, but Vantus refused. Fortunately for him, you stopped by and can convince Vantus to help Cicero.
You will have the option to run past Cicero and speak with Vantus first. This will not change the quest, but you will get to hear Vantus’ side of the story prior to speaking with Cicero.
Speaking With Vantus Loreius
Now that you have spoken with Cicero, head up to the farm and speak with Vantus Loreius. As you speak with him, Vantus will tell you about Cicero’s strange behavior and how he thinks that the wagon contains something illegal.
At the end of the conversation, Vantus will ask that you convince a guard to arrest Cicero.
Should You Report Cicero Or Persuade Vantus To Help Him?
After speaking with both of them, you will now need to make your decision. You can either report Cicero to the guards, or persuade Vantus to help him.
Let’s go over each of these options below.
Helping Cicero
To help Cicero, you will need to pass an easy speak check with Vantus to persuade him to help. Once persuaded, speak with Cicero and he will reward you with gold depending on your level.
When you encounter Cicero later in the story, he will give you a small amount of gold, thanking you again for helping.
Reporting Cicero
If you choose to report Cicero, you will need to find guards along the road. The guard in question should be nearby Cicero’s wagon; approach and speak with him. You will have three possible persuasion options, all resulting in the arrest of Cicero.
Persuading the guard will cause him to arrest Cicero. Now, you can return to Vantus and receive a reward of gold depending on your current level.
Who Should You Help?
If you chose to help Cicero, he will show gratitude to you later when you join the Dark Brotherhood. As mentioned above, he will also give you a small amount of gold.
If you reported Cicero, he will come back to Loreius Farm and kill Vantus along with his wife. Additionally, Cicero will be upset and be quite rude when you speak with him as a member of the Dark Brotherhood.
Overall, there are no long-term consequences of these options. This quest will affect the way that Cicero addresses you when you speak with him in the future. If you do not do this quest, then Cicero will have no extra dialogue options. Although the death of Vantus and his wife is sad, they are not important NPCs and are not essential to any other quests.
The choice of who to help is up to you; with no serious consequences, you can help whoever you deem worthy.
