A Skyrim player recently spotted a worthy opponent for their Dragonborn in the form of a giant riding a dragon. First released in 2011, Bethesda’s action role-playing title The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim continues to captivate its players thanks to its open-world gameplay and its massive modding community, with a plethora of mods available that help keep the game interesting.
The next addition to The Elder Scrolls franchise was first revealed during E3 in 2018 in the form of a short video teaser displaying little but a series of landscapes. Now, three years on since its initial announcement, the game is still a long way from release, with Bethesda stating that its studio’s main focus is currently on its newest IP, Starfield. During an interview in June, Bethesda Game Studios Director Todd Howard stated that Elder Scrolls 6 is in a design phase currently, with the developers attached to the project currently focused on checking whether the Creation Engine 2 has the technology required to implement the intended features for the game.
Reddit user the_woolsey_mammoth shared a video of their terrifying encounter with a formidable opponent in the form of a giant flying by on a dragon. Upon fast traveling to the Tundra Homestead east of Whiterun, the Dragonborn was immediately met with the sound of leathery wings flapping in the distance, signaling the presence of a dragon. Turning towards the disturbance, the_woolsey_mammoth was greeted with a worthy challenge that would truly test the Dragonborn’s combat prowess: a giant had seemingly teamed up with the dragon, standing on top of the creature as it flew away.
Dragon riding is a feature that was introduced with the game’s Dragonborn DLC and is unlocked when all three words of the Bend Will shout are found during their player’s quest to kill Skyrim’s Miraak the Dragon Priest. While the monstrous pairing of a giant and a dragon would indeed be a difficult challenge for any player, the alliance was unfortunately cut short, as the giant seemed to vanish after a few seconds. It is unclear how the giant managed to get on top of the dragon to hitch a ride in the first place, as only the Dragonborn is able to properly ride and tame the winged creatures.
The_woolsey_mammoth’s amusing encounter reveals that Skyrim continues to surprise its players in new and interesting ways, despite being almost 11 years old. This rare team-up could easily serve as inspiration for a challenging new mod, as players would not only have to grapple with a dragon’s arsenal of shouts and attacks but also deal with potentially being knocked into Skyrim’s stratosphere by the giant.
