There are thousands 0f NPCs to encounter in Skyrim, some of which are more memorable than others in one way or another. While bizarre characters such as Cicero and Sheogorath are well known by fans of the Elder Scrolls series by this point, many other unique personalities may be more difficult to run into in a standard playthrough, or their secret oddities may be more well-hidden than many Skyrim players would expect. Here are some of the weirdest NPCs in the game, as well as where to look for them.

Many of Skyrim’s strangest NPCs can be tied back to the Elder Scrolls series’ Daedric Princes, whose morality doesn’t often align with that of mortals. Others may seem like reasonably standard adversaries until players manage to find and read their journals, which serve to provide additional backstory and explanation for motives that otherwise may not seem to make much sense. In that regard, Bethesda made it more worthwhile to seek out the hundreds of books, notes, and journals scattered throughout the world. It’s a unique opportunity to find lore about characters who might otherwise be looked over.

While most of these characters can be found in one set location, a few others tend to wander around the map and might be challenging to encounter while exploring. It makes it more exciting to run into them, though, given how rare these encounters are. It can be a challenge to fully discover all the various elements of the game’s vast world since the map of Skyrim is full of hidden locations and characters that prove to be welcome surprises for even the most experienced Skyrim player.

Weird Skyrim NPC: Knjakr, The Riften Ratways’ Cannibal Chef

Players are likely to encounter Knjakr as they play through the main storyline of Skyrim, as the primary quest has them venturing down near the Ratway Warrens in Riften. The characters housed in the Warrens give off the impression that they’re hiding away for one reason or another, either not wanting to be found by the authorities or simply by the rest of society. Knjakr is just another example of that. To see him, players need to go up to the second floor of the Warrens, which are located through the Ratway Vaults. The Vaults can be accessed through Skyrim’s Thieves Guild headquarters.

When players first approach Knjakr’s room, he’ll begin to taunt them from afar, trying to coax them to come in and see him. Right away, his dialogue should set off some red flags regarding why exactly he’s hiding out in Riften’s Ratway. He talks extensively about wanting to bite the Dragonborn, calling them a tender and juicy morsel. As soon as players enter the room fully, he’ll become hostile and attack, allowing them to get a look at his chef’s outfit. His attire could imply that Knjakr was a cook before potentially being ousted from the position due to his cannibalism.

Weird Skyrim NPC: The Chicken Necromancer

The Chicken Necromancer in Skyrim is one of the more well-known oddities in the game despite being located at an unmarked area of the map. To find him, players should travel southeast toward Riften, looking for a rocky hillside located between the tomb of Geirmund’s Hall and Honeystrand cave. There, they’ll find an NPC clothed in necromancer robes seemingly hard at work on bringing dead chickens back to life.

In fact, it seems as though he was pretty successful in that endeavor. If players get close enough to alert him of the Dragonborn’s presence, he’ll summon undead chickens to aid him and initiate combat. Fortunately, he’s relatively easy to take out. There’s some decent loot to be found around his reanimation site, as well, making it more worthwhile to seek out the Chicken Necromancer, although it’s already a unique glimpse into the strange lore of many of Skyrim’s NPCs.

Weird Skyrim NPC: The Dark Brotherhood’s Youngest Vampire, Babette

Unlike many of the other characters on this list, who don’t play prominent roles in Skyrim’s main storylines and may actually go entirely unnoticed by a large chunk of players, Babette is an important character in Skyrim’s Dark Brotherhood questline. She can be found by either joining or destroying the Dark Brotherhood and seemingly spends the majority of her time within the Sanctuary. She’s one of the few Dark Brotherhood NPCs who can survive long enough to make the move from Falkreath to Dawnstar.

Babette may look like a standard child in terms of appearances, but in reality, that’s far from the truth. She was bitten by a vampire at the age of 10 and has subsequently lived for around 300 years or so, using her innocent appearance to lure unsuspecting victims into her traps. She’s a master of alchemy and seemingly uses both her vampire abilities and her knowledge of poisons to do away with her victims. Babette can also appear as a random encounter out across Skyrim during the Dawnguard DLC’s primary storyline.

Weird Skyrim NPC: Hamelyn In Honningbrew Meadery

Hamelyn is one weird Skyrim NPC that players may not even notice. There’s no option to interact with him; he merely attacks the Dragonborn as soon as he spots them. His location, however, is part of the reason he’s so odd. He lives underneath the Honningbrew Meadery just outside of Whiterun and will likely only be encountered if players choose to complete Skyrim’s Thieves Guild questline. To reach him, players will have to fight through hordes of skeevers in the rat tunnels beneath the building.

Upon looting his body, however, players have the opportunity to learn quite a bit more about this unusual Skyrim NPC. Hamelyn previously studied as an alchemist in the College of Winterhold but was expelled due to his irresponsible behavior. From there, he went on to Whiterun, where he was jailed and subsequently escaped from prison into the tunnels beneath the city. There, he spent his time conducting unusual research on the skeevers, which seemingly resulted in them gaining venomous abilities.

Weird Skyrim NPC: Markarth’s Secret Cannibal Shopkeeper

Markarth is already arguably one of the strangest and most interesting cities in Skyrim thanks to its notable Daedric ties and the Forsworn conspiracy taking place in the background. Still, another oddity is hiding just inside the city center in the store Arnleif and Sons Trading Company. The shop is run by Lisbet, who has taken over running it following the recent passing of her husband Gunnar. During most encounters, she seems mostly normal. During the Daedric quest “The Taste of Death,” however, another side of Lisbet is revealed.

It turns out she’s part of a group of Namira worshippers who engage in cannibalism. It’s then confirmed that her husband is only gone because she ate him. Another conversation that players can overhear during the Daedric quest seems to imply that she ate her brother, too. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t let players do anything about this, and the guards can’t be tipped off to her actions despite the Dragonborn potentially confronting her about it when they meet up again in the store following the events of Namira’s quest.

Weird Skyrim NPC: Madwoman Encounter With The Wabbajack

Unlike many of the other weirdest NPCs in Skyrim, the Madwoman is relatively difficult to find. She shows up as a random encounter found wandering around Skyrim and has a chance to appear even before her associated quest, “The Mind of Madness,” is completed. Upon running into her, she’ll ask the Dragonborn to give her a shot with the Wabbajack, the Daedric artifact that players can acquire after encountering the returning Elder Scrolls fan-favorite character Sheogorath. The staff will turn her into a rabbit and players may acquire a small bounty as a result, but other than that she doesn’t serve much purpose. She’s just another unusual character that can be found while wandering the map.

Weird Skyrim NPC: M’aiq The Liar Reappears

Another wanderer, and arguably one of the most well-known characters in the Elder Scrolls series thanks to his presence in both Morrowind and Oblivion, is M’aiq the Liar. Like the Madwoman, he spawns randomly around the map and will offer anywhere from one to five random lines of dialogue when players speak to him. Notably, his conversations almost always involve fourth-wall-breaking references to the game’s storyline, graphics, and the changes the series has gone through over the years. He’s a fun Skyrim Easter egg to search for and a reminder of how even the most unusual parts of Skyrim fit into the overarching and unusual lore of the Elder Scrolls franchise as a whole.
