Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Mi 11, will ship without a charger in the box, company co-founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun has confirmed. Jun cited environmental protection as the reason behind the decision. It means the Xiaomi Mi 11 will be the latest high-profile smartphone to be sold without a charger.

Most notably, Apple opted to ship the iPhone 12 without a charger in the box and it looks like Samsung will follow suit when it launches the Galaxy S21 line in the new year. Interestingly, both Samsung and Xiaomi took aim at Apple for its decision to drop the charger from the iPhone 12’s box earlier in the year. Whether due to environmental conscience or bottom line, though, both now seem to have come around to Apple’s way of thinking.

Certainly, the environment was the line Jun was going with when he posted the announcement to Weibo. He noted, rightly, that many people already have chargers that are unused and that providing a charger that is not necessarily needed in the box of a new smartphone by default puts an avoidable burden on the environment. Jun also unveiled the “light and thin” packaging in which the Mi 11 would be shipped and confirmed a launch press conference about the phone for December 28, 2020.

Xiaomi, Samsung & Apple: A New Norm For Phone Chargers?

Smartphone manufacturers are right to flag the environmental problem that their devices present. Mining metals for their components, manufacturing the devices, and the waste that results from devices that are no longer used all take a toll on the environment. Not providing a charger by default with a new smartphone is one way to tackle this.

However, it should not be surprising if consumers are skeptical about the newfound environmental conviction of smartphone brands. The proliferation of disused chargers has been a problem of their making through a failure to standardize chargers sooner and more widely. Nor have they been so active or vocal about smartphone recycling schemes or trade-in schemes via which phones might ultimately be recycled.

So, when consumers point to profits as being the main driver behind manufacturers removing chargers from their boxes — providing less for the same amount — those manufacturers may struggle to offer convincing arguments to say otherwise. Without being able to point to the saving that the consumer is making as a result or the other major efforts they are making to minimize their environmental impact elsewhere, the decision not to provide chargers with new devices may be viewed with cynicism regardless how well-intentioned it is.
