When you ask someone what their game of the year is, they will usually only give you a single name. It seems that the people behind Famitsu magazine are not so decisive, as they gave the Game of the Year award to two different games during the 2018 Famitsu Awards – Monster Hunter World and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. (via. Nintendo Everything)

Famitsu is a highly respected Japanese gaming publication that is notorious for only ever giving a perfect 40/40 score to a handful of games, some of which might seem surprising, like Nintendogs and Final Fantasy XIII-2. In recent years, Famitsu has held an awards ceremony that is broadcast online in order to honor the best games and developers from the previous twelve months.

The 2018 Famitsu Awards have concluded and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Monster Hunter World both won the Game of the Year Award. It bears mentioning that Monster Hunter World actually received a higher review score in Famitsu magazine, as it received a nearly perfect 39/40, while Super Smash Bros. Ultimate only received a 38/40.

Masahiro Sakurai won the MVP Award, which may have been prompted by the fact that he actually writes a regular column for Famitsu. He attended the Famitsu Awards in order to accept his honors and even mentioned the fact that Joker would be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate soon, though he neglected to mention a date. (via.
