The next major update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is due to arrive soon, as the 4.0.0 patch will be released sometime before August 4.

Masahiro Sakurai will be hosting a video presentation on July 30 that will offer an in-depth look at Hero from Dragon Quest, who has only been shown during his initial announcement at E3 2019. The release of Hero is imminent, and Sakurai will finally explain some of the finer details of his magic system.

Hero will be added in the upcoming 4.0.0 patch. According to SSBUBot, the expiry time for the patch will occur around August 4, which means that it should arrive before then. Those of you who like to save videos of their games will need to backup any replays by converting them into videos.

The past few patches that have been released for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate so far have included far more updates than anyone might have expected. The 3.1.0 added Labo VR functionality and more options for amiibos, while the 3.0.0 patch added Joker, a selection of Persona 5 Spirits, and the Stage Builder mode. It’s possible that the 4.0.0 patch will add more than just Hero and other Dragon Quest content to the game, as we may see another returning mode, such as the Home-Run Contest.

There is almost guaranteed to be some balance updates included in the next patch, which could drastically alter the shape of the competitive scene. The last patch nerfed Olimar and Pichu hard, while also drastically dampening the effectiveness of ranged attacks on shields. One can only wonder which character will be hit by Sakurai’s nerf hammer this month (but we hope it’s Inkling).

The fact that Evo 2019 ends on August 4 and that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be the last game featured at the event suggests that Hero might be released shortly after Evo concludes, possibly with a trailer shown during the event itself.

The Hero presentation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be held on July 30 at 6 am P.T.
