Here is something to believe in! Everyone’s favorite Garreg Mach Monastery professor is making their Smash debut. Nintendo has officially confirmed Byleth as the newest fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Let the lesson begin!

Nintendo of Europe’s official Twitter dropped the news earlier today in a tweet featuring official character art of both Male and Female Byleth avatars wielding the legendary Sword of the Creator. Byleth made their debut in Nintendo’s hit Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which was released to commercial and critical acclaim last July. They will make their Smash debut beginning January 29.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai also released a nearly 40-minute video on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel disucssing the new character in-depth.

Despite the success of Three Houses and Byleth’s relative popularity, reactions to this news have been…mixed, to say the least. While some avid Fire Emblem and Three Houses fans have reacted positively, other passionate Smash players are a little disappointed.

Smash Bros. Ultimate’s insane character roster currently features seven characters from the Fire Emblem universe: Marth, Lucina, Roy, Chrom, Ike, Robin, and Corrin. Some Smash players feel like the inclusion of another Fire Emblem character, especially one for a game that’s not even a full year old yet, is unnecessary and unwarranted.

Others who spent weeks and days hypothesizing who the next additions to Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster would be are also upset that none of their predictions ultimately came true. Many fans were thoroughly convinced that Nintendo’s announcement would confirm a long-standing suspicion that Devil May Cry protagonist Dante would be the next character to join the fight. The theory really took flight earlier this week when Brian Hanford, the voice of V in Devil May Cry 5 made a statement that implied Dante might be the next Smash addition.

Another fighter many fans were hoping for was Kingdom Hearts’s beloved protagonist Sora. Those fans who hoped for his inclusion also created a theory based on a tweet about Masahiro Sakurai that speculated he was giving fans a cryptic signal that someone from Kingdom Hearts might be added.

Unfortunately, there’s no telling if and when Dante, Sora, or any disappointed fans’ favorites will be added to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster.

The only thing we know for certain is that Three Houses has officially infiltrated Smash.
