A Satutrday Night Live sketch managed to take Jim Carrey’s impersonation of Joe Biden to the next level: by included elements of The Fly. Carrey debuted his take on Biden in the season 46 premiere of SNL, squaring off against Alec Baldwin’s version of Trump. For his second outing in the role on October 10, Carrey went with a less traditional portrayal of the Democratic nominee.

SNL began with a sketch devoted to the vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, which took place during the previous week. Maya Rudolph and Beck Bennett reprised their roles as Harris and Pence, respectively, and the opening segment featured plenty of gentle digs at the politicians as moderator Susan Page (played by Kate McKinnon) questioned the two debaters on their weak points. However, just like in the real world, it was the fly that landed on Pence’s head which ultimately stole the spotlight. The insect remained on Pence’s head for over two minutes during the debate, and it allowed SNL to pay tribute to The Fly, which starred Jeff Goldblum.

For the second episode of season 46, SNL allowed the special guest at the VP debate to take center stage. As he watches the debate on television, Biden grows increasingly frustrated with Pence’s tendency to interrupt Harris. In order to help to his running mate, Biden enters a transformation device similar to the famous telepod in The Fly. Just like in the movie directed by David Cronenberg, a fly unexpectedly enters the pod with Biden and causes him to turn into the insect. Although the homage is largely an excuse for Carrey to show off his delightful impression of Goldblum.

At first, Carrey is just a miniature version of Biden that’s hanging around the head of Pence. But rapidly, Carrey’s impersonation becomes less like Democratic nominee and more like Goldblum. Carrey adapts Goldblum’s famous way of speaking and gradually begins to look like him too, wearing Goldblum’s iconic glasses and getting a healthy head of hair. Carrey even works in an advertisement for Apartments.com, which Goldblum is a spokesperson for. Carrey’s take on Biden has drawn mixed reactions overall, with many fans expressing the view that such a significant role should have gone to an SNL regular, but it’s hard to deny that Carrey captures the essence of Goldblum quite well. SNL does manage to include a bit of pointed commentary. Carrey is joined by Herman Cain (Kenan Thompson) late in the sketch, with the former Republican presidential candidate being reincarnated as a fly. Cain died on July 30 due to complications from COVID-19. SNL doesn’t shy away from tackling the fact that Cain contracted the coronavirus shortly after attending a rally without masks, which was held by President Trump.

All and all, the episode’s interpretation of the vice presidential debate was one of its more clever openings. Too often, in recent memory, SNL’s political commentary has consisted of bringing in familiar faces to do slightly more comedic reenactments of events that have already occurred. While this is understandable in one sense, particularly because many political headlines now seem to defy parody, there are plenty of ways to think outside the box and deliver something different to audiences. It’s safe to say that not many viewers anticipated, going into this week’s edition of Saturday Night Live, that the plot of The Fly would become a topic of conversation. But it ended up being more entertaining than a strict recap of the news would have been.
