Caution: spoilers ahead for The Witcher season 2

Could Ciri’s mother still be alive in Netflix’s The Witcher? Freya Allan’s Princess Cirillia of Cintra (Ciri to her friends) comes of age in The Witcher season 2, learning the art of combat under Geralt’s cautious tutelage, and finally unearthing the true source of her amazing magical Chaos. Ciri possesses Elder Blood, passed down through the female lineage of an especially potent brand of genetically-enhanced elves. The gene lay dormant in Ciri’s grandmother, Queen Calanthe, but manifested in the trainee Witcher’s great-grandmother, as well as her mother, Princess Pavetta. Now Ciri herself is awakening the power of the Elder Blood, revealed as Lara Dorren’s child of prophecy.

Raised by Calanthe, Ciri always believed her parents died when she was a baby. The Witcher season 2 dramatically proves otherwise, revealing Nilfgaard’s dictator – Emhyr var Emreis, the White Flame – is actually Ciri’s father. When the character appeared in The Witcher season 1 as “Duny,” his kindness thawed even Geralt’s icy heart. Emhyr has since become a brutal and influential leader in the south who’ll sink to any moral depravity if it means reuniting with his daughter.

Emhyr’s survival raises question marks over the status of Ciri’s mother. If her parents were supposed to have perished on the same night – and Ciri’s father actually survived – could that mean Pavetta is secretly still alive also? For several reasons, almost certainly not. Firstly, The Witcher season 2’s White Flame twist is ripped directly from Andrzej Sapkowski’s source material, while Pavetta’s death in the books is absolutely genuine. Netflix’s adaptation is unlikely to deviate in that respect, meaning viewers shouldn’t Ciri’s mother to crawl out from the woodwork anytime soon.

The biggest clue, however, comes in The Witcher season 2’s finale (appropriately titled “Family”). When Ciri is trapped in a mental illusion by the Deathless Mother, she perceives a world where her parents never died, but Geralt and Yennefer awaken Ciri, causing that fantasy realm to crumble. Queen Calanthe, Mousesack and Pavetta – all family members known to be dead – turn to dust in a manner Thanos would be proud of. Strangely, the projection of “Duny” never weakens, remaining whole even as Ciri breaks the illusion. The visual cue foreshadows Emhyr’s Witcher season 2 survival, and perhaps also hints that Ciri subconsciously knew her father wasn’t dead. Ciri’s expression when Geralt questions how Nilfgaard knew of her importance before anyone else hints at something inside Ciri knowing one parent was still breathing.

Of course, Ciri’s mother staying dead while her husband lingers on as Nilfgaard’s ruler raises questions of its own. Ciri believed her parents drowned together, but if Emhyr is alive, the true account of that fateful voyage fleeing Cintra needs to be told. Did Emhyr wash up ashore through pure fortune, or were more sinister machinations at play? “Duny” obviously harbored a darker streak The Witcher season 1 never revealed, meaning Pavetta could’ve met a violent end. Or maybe it was losing his wife that turned Duny into the villain currently wreaking havoc in season 2. Now the White Flame is taking matters into his own hands, it’s only a matter of time before he and Ciri reunite and the full story is recounted.

Ciri’s mother might still be dead in The Witcher, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Pavetta can’t influence the story’s future. As demonstrated by Triss, Ciri is capable of walking through lost genetic memories, allowing her to witness Lara Dorren’s final moments, as well as the night her parents supposedly drowned while running away. Unusually, however, these memories can interact with Ciri, and as her thirst for answers grows, that mental photo album could be key to unlocking the truth in The Witcher season 3.
