There’s a little social media platform known as TikTok, which has managed to dish up as much creativity from users as controversy. One brilliant creation replaces a few lines of Billie Eilish’s hit Therefore I Am with the guard’s famous dialogue from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

“Stop! You’ve violated the law!” is a popular meme amongst the Oblivion community, and is also a well-known Vine; TikTok’s predecessor. Music creator lawntawn has been doing a series of posts on the social platform that replaces sections of songs with other material – much to comic effect. Her recent creation -suggested by another user – allows an Oblivion guard to share his vocals with Eilish’s, replacing the song’s hook with: “Stop! You’ve violated the law. Pay the court a fine or serve your sentence. Your stolen goods are now forfeit. Then pay with your blood!”

Lawntawn took a particular liking to this suggestion and commented that it turned out “so good” before revealing her mash-up. The guard’s dialogue does fit rather well, supported by Eilish’s return who seems to respond to the guard’s demands quite comically. Redditor thelonelymilkman23 shared the post, receiving a fair amount of comments from other users. A few redditors commented that they have become quite fond of Therefore I Am remixes, preferring them over the original song. Others highlighted how iconic the Oblivion guards are, admitting that they bring back memories of a “love/hate relationship”.

Therefore I Am continues Eilish’s penchant for sultry, rhythmic vocals and moody bass lines, which couldn’t be more of a contrast to The Elder Scrolls. This disparity, however, is what makes these mashups work so well, and lawntawn has a ton of them under her belt. Everything from SpongeBob SquarePants cameos to Bobby Hill’s impression of “Weird Al” Yankovic has been remastered into Eilish’s song and others. The meme, on the other hand, that first turned the guard’s dialogue into a highly quotable comeback, continues to be included in parodies of Eminem’s Without Me.

The Elder Scrolls also has several memes spawning from fan-favorite race the Khajiit, as well as a number of Stormcloak Rebellion memes from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. On a more serious note, we’ve also compiled a list of easter eggs from Oblivion that you may have missed during your first playthrough.
