The designs used in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie have drawn ire from people across the internet, to the point where one fan has given the world a glimpse at what the video games would have looked like if they had used the new Sonic from the film.

The first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released on April 30 and it was met with almost universal hatred from the fans. The design of Sonic was the most criticized aspect of the trailer, as his longer limbs and more human-like face have unsettled a lot of people, as they are used to the original cartoon version of the character. The backlash against the movie version of Sonic has reached the point where Paramount promised that Sonic’s aesthetic will be changed in the final cut of the movie. The only bright spot in the trailer was Jim Carrey chewing the scenery as Dr. Robotnik, even though he only looks like the original version of the character for a few seconds.

The horror of Sonic’s movie debut is not so easily forgotten, and there are some fans who have embraced the monstrous form that the Blue Blur almost took. A Twitter user named @morkitten has recreated the opening menu of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, except that Sonic now uses his first design from the movie.

The movie version of Sonic separated his eyes, removed his gloves, gave him lots of individual spikes on his head, and added a set of creepy human teeth. The changes to the movie version of Sonic might not be apparent to someone who hasn’t played the games in a while, but it becomes a lot clearer when it is seen in the context of the menu of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie debacle has only been made worse by the presence of Detective Pikachu, which is being praised by critics for how well the CGI Pokémon are integrated into its world. The Detective Pikachu producers had to do this with numerous Pokémon, while the producers of Sonic the Hedgehog only had to do it with a single character.

The fact that the producers of Sonic the Hedgehog have agreed to change Sonic’s design in response to the backlash is promising, but the movie is due to be released in November, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for a major character in the movie to receive a design overhaul. It remains to be seen whether Sonic the Hedgehog can be salvaged, but at least the internet can have a laugh by adding his awful new design into the classic games.
