Sonic Frontiers was announced at The Game Awards 2021 with a first look trailer that featured a preview of the game’s lush green landscape and overgrown ruins. This new world is full of crumbling structures and has a vast, lonely atmosphere, and its main attraction looks like a tall tower that’s overrun with plant life. Whatever Sonic finds himself up against in the newest game in the series promises to be bigger than ever before, and players are in for a new experience with the “open-zone freedom” Sega teases on the official Sonic Frontiers website.
While it’s unclear how close “open-zone” will be to “open-world,” the footage shown in the trailer looks more like Breath of the Wild’s open world than any 3D Sonic game in the past. Players’ first glimpse of the Starfall Islands was downright breathtaking, and while Sonic wasn’t shown running through any of these environments just yet, there seems to be plenty of space for players to explore freely rather than racing along a set track. However, not only does Starfall Island share open-world vibes with games like Breath of the Wild and Shadow of the Colossus, but the Sonic Frontiers trailer is weirdly similar to the trailer for the upcoming Kirby game, Kirby & The Forgotten Land.
Kirby & The Forgotten Land was announced in September’s Nintendo Direct and features an abandoned and overgrown mall as its primary setting. Like Sonic Frontiers, Kirby & The Forgotten Land’s setting also features an abandoned civilization, as well as an overgrown tower as its central landmark. While Kirby & The Forgotten Land’s city is a lot more modern than the ancient-looking ruins of the Sonic Frontiers trailer, they both take place in the remnants of forgotten civilizations, giving these upcoming releases similar motifs and aesthetics.
Sonic Frontiers and Kirby & The Forgotten Land Look A Lot Alike
Both Sonic Frontiers and Kirby & The Forgotten Land feature settings that are in the process of being reclaimed by nature, leaving only serene remnants of civilizations long-gone for players to explore. While it’s unclear what Sonic Frontiers’ gameplay will be like, Kirby & The Forgotten Land is confirmed to be the first 3D platformer in the Kirby series, marking a welcome change for the franchise and giving Kirby more freedom of movement. If Sonic Frontiers incorporates elements of 3D platforming like previous games in the Sonic franchise, these two games may wind up with even more similarities beyond their settings.
Whether these similarities are coincidental or signs of an overall shift in gaming as a whole remains to be seen, and in the meantime, fans will have to wait patiently for these games to arrive next year. Kirby & The Forgotten Land is scheduled to release in Spring 2022, and Sonic Frontiers will be released for the Holiday season of 2022. Both games will be available on Nintendo Switch, and Sonic Frontiers will also be available to play on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
