The highly-acclaimed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is coming to Nintendo Switch later this month. So far, 2020 is shaping up to be a big year for everyone’s favorite Blue Blur. Paramount’s adaption is releasing in theaters next week. SEGA also revealed news regarding the franchise will be announced every 20th of the month for the rest of the year.
Next to Mario and Pac-Man, Sonic is easily the most recognizable video game mascot. Since his debut in 1991, Sonic has been the star of numerous titles. Some, like Sonic Adventure, are well-liked. Others, like Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, have been heavily criticized. The franchise has certainly seen its ups and downs. One thing has remained constant, however: It is nearly impossible to find someone who doesn’t think Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a crowning achievement in the character’s career.
Released for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1992, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the followup to the original 1991 game. It took all the concepts of its predecessor, and arguably improved upon them. Sonic 2 features unforgettable zones, such as Chemical Plant Zone and Mystic Cave Zone, as well as one of the most challenging final bosses in the series. Of course, Sonic 2 also introduced Tails. Sonic’s powered-up form, Super Sonic, made its debut here as well. Nintendo Switch owners will finally be able to relive this classic.
SEGA announced it is adding two new titles to its SEGA Ages lineup later this month on Nintendo Switch. One is Puyo Puyo 2, and the other is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. According to Nintendo Everything, the Sonic 2 port in SEGA Ages will feature the “drop dash” mechanic from Sonic Mania. In addition, there will be a mode allowing players to play as Super Sonic from the beginning. Knuckles will be playable as well. There will be online rankings for Time Trials.
The SEGA Ages lineup has notable titles, including Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Sonic 2 being available is a victory for those looking to play more classic SEGA games on Switch. Like the other SEGA Ages titles, Sonic 2 and Puyo Puyo 2 will be priced at 7.99 on the Switch’s eShop. They arrive February 20.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is certainly worth playing at least once. Its gameplay and level design have been acclaimed, as well as the memorable soundtrack. (Who doesn’t sit back and enjoy the music in Sky Chase Zone?) The legacy left by Sonic 2 is massive.
