2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprising success after it got off to a rocky start on its initial design of the titular hedgehog himself. The promising presence of Sega’s greatest character prompts potential for other characters of the franchise to pop up in future installments. Sure enough, to those who watched 2020’s Sonic, this happened in a sequel-baiting mid-credits scene.

With a sequel already officially announced, it is worth speculating which Sonic characters will appear (other than Tails). For that, here are five characters fans need to see in the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel and five to skip for future installments.

10 Need to See: Amy Rose

Amy Rose is a pink hedgehog and the love interest of Sonic. Since their first encounter in Little Planet, Amy becomes obsessive about him and vows to win his heart through any means. She also wields a melee weapon, Piko Piko Hammer, to overcome adversaries.

The hedgehog first appeared in 1993’s Sonic the Hedgehog CD. And she proves herself to be competitive and powerful. While that is a positive, she is also a notoriously an annoying presence in the Sonic pantheon (making her a good foil for Sonic’s hyperactive personality).

9 Skip: Blaze the Cat

Blaze the Cat is a purple princess from an alternate dimension. She is the appointed guardian of the Sol Emeralds, known for their immense power. She holds the power of pyrokinesis and the ability to manipulate fire; thus, her namesake. While she is initially concealing of her emotions, she opens up to Sonic and company with their friendship.

This cat princess first appeared Sonic Rush and became a favorite playable character for many Sonic games. Despite her status, it may take a few more world-building sequels to grasp her complexity.

8 Need to See: Shadow the Hedgehog

A creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow the Hedgehog is a black hedgehog and an antihero figure who shares many attributes with Sonic but uses his abilities to serve his goals (except with more enhancements in firearms), which puts him at odds with the blue hedgehog.

Shadow became a fan favorite from his first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2. Ever since then, he appeared in succeeding Sonic games and is often the subject of debate. Even with that, his appearance on the Sonic sequel could expand Robotnik’s unrevealed origin story.

7 Skip: Babylon Rogues

The Babylon Rogues are a trio of birds who are designed as foils for the racing games Sonic Riders, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity and Sonic Free Riders. They are composed of Jet the Hawk (the ring leader), Wave the Swallow (the clever mechanic), and Storm the Albatross (the right-hand man).

While they are well-suited obstacles in the games, they are sources of annoyance for fans, most especially for Jet, who is perceived as irritating. If Jim Carrey’s Robotnik requires new henchmen in his planetary banishment, it should not be them.

6 Need to See: Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic is the robotic recreation of Sonic by Dr. Robotnik, only evil. Despite possessing the same abilities as Sonic (since Robotnik replicates Sonic’s abilities and uploads it to the cyborg), he is equipped with a laser cannon, a jet engine, and force field that shields from attacks.

The robotic hedgehog first appears in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, where Robotnik orders him to change the past à la Terminator and stop Sonic. Seeing the prospects of where Sonic the Hedgehog ended, making Metal Sonic a major antagonist would be great.

5 Skip: Cream the Rabbit and Cheese

Cream the Rabbit is a peach-colored happy-go-lucky rabbit who has a blue Chao companion named Cheese. Cream has the ability to fly by flapping her ears, while Cheese attacks foes by ramming into them. Though she can be polite and gentle, she would act childish to her friends.

Despite her tender appearances that started in Sonic Advance 2, she is perceived negatively as an annoying character with her high-pitched voice, her chirpiness, and her repetitive dialogue. Even with that, there is potential in the duo, just not in the sequel.

4 Need to See: Rouge the Bat

Fans know that Rouge the Bat is a female bat who is both a renowned jewel thief and a government agent. Her effervescent appearance, which works as a distraction for others, makes her really devious and manipulative, especially with her treasure-hunting pursuits. Her superhuman strength also rivals others. Her signature move is the Screw Kick.

After her debut appearance in Sonic Adventure 2, Rouge became a recurring character in the anime series Sonic X and the Archie Comics series. Thus, an appearance in the sequel could make her a good foil against Sonic.

3 Skip: Wisps

Wisps are celestial creatures who come in different shapes, colors, and sizes. They live in the Planet Wisp, where they are governed by a larger being called Mother Wisp. These critters are composed of energy called “Hyper-go-ons”, which grants elemental powers to the possessor. Sonic and Tails initially cannot understand their language but Tails invents a translating device for Sonic.

The Wisps first appeared in Sonic Colors, where they came in ten types. While they work as background characters, they should not be the alien race that Robotnik encounters.

2 Need to See: Knuckles the Echidna

Sonic The Hedgehog 5 Characters Fans Need To See In The Sequel (& 5 They Can Skip)

Knuckles the Echidna is the character most worthy of an appearance in the sequel since his tribe (including the leader Pachacamac) appeared in the opening sequence where they intercepted Sonic’s caretaker, Longclaw the Owl. Knuckles’ involvement in the franchise started in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when Robotnik tricks him into opposing Sonic and Tails. His popularity soon built up from there.

With his status as a fan favorite, it is a no-brainer to bring Knuckles as a Sonic’s foe from the start before he eventually learns of Robotnik’s deception. Their rivalry is exciting.

1 Skip: Big the Cat

Big the Cat is a large purple cat whose main gimmick is his penchant for fishing, usually with his frog friend Froggy. He is perceived as a gentle giant – unintelligent yet friendly and easygoing. This cat debuted in Sonic Adventure, who is set up to justify the fishing rod in the game.

With his “involvement” in other Sonic games and comic storylines, fans regarded him as one of the worst characters in the franchise. And seeing the track record of popular gentle giants, Big will serve as an unnecessary Hodor. Just think twice about Big.
