While he recently got to voice famed video game character Sonic the Hedgehog in the latter’s big-screen debut, Ben Schwartz’s history in entertainment is much longer. He’s made appearances in some of the most popular films and television shows ever made, and as a natural comedian he’s often hailed as one of the funniest children in Hollywood.

He’s been in a lot of great stuff, but here are the roles that review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes considered to be his absolute best.

10 Standing Up, Falling Down (2020) – 84%

The 2020 film Standing Up, Falling Down stars Schwartz as Marty, an unaccomplished stand-up comedian who’s forced to get his act together after bombing in L.A. and moving back to his hometown of Long Island. There, he forms an unlikely bond with an offbeat dermatologist (played by Billy Crystal) who has struggles of his own, leading both to question if past mistakes can ever truly be undone.

The film was praised by critics as a comedic masterpiece that seamlessly blended wry humor with touching drama, and both Schwartz and Crystal were duly commended on their performances.

9 The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2018) – 85%

The Lego Movie 2 follows Emmet Brickowski, a cheerful minifigure who teams up with the charismatic adventurer Rex Dangervest to save his friends after they’re kidnapped by outsiders from the perilous Systar System and taken to its shape-shifting empress Watevra Wa’Nabi (whose court jester is a banana, voiced by Schwartz).

While it wasn’t as critically or commercially successful as its predecessor, the film still received fairly positive reviews for its characters, humor, and story.

8 The Simpsons (1989-) – 85%

Back in 2015, Schwartz made a cameo appearance on The Simpsons, a popular animated sitcom focusing on the titular working-class dysfunctional family and their neighbors in the town of Springfield. The episode in question is season 27’s “Cue Detective”, in which Schwartz plays a store clerk who “assists” Lisa and Bart in solving the mystery of who took Homer’s prized BBQ smoker.

The episode received fairly positive reviews for its story and acting, and was watched by more than 6 million people on its original air date, making it Fox’s highest-rated show that night.

7 Modern Family (2009-2020) – 86%

The ABC sitcom Modern Family is a mockumentary about a retired entrepreneur and his sizable helping of kinfolk all living together in suburban Los Angeles; the show sheds light on real-life struggles while never venturing too far from its comedic roots.

Ben Schwartz has appeared three times on Modern Family, beginning with the season 9 finale “Clash of Swords”, in which he plays Nick, a Hero-Con attendee. The show has received positive reviews from critics and is ABC’s longest-running comedy series to date.

6 Bob’s Burgers (2011-) – 91%

It’s regarded as one of animated television’s greatest hits and is known for taking on serious issues such as self-destructive behavior and substance abuse.

Schwartz had a recurring role on the series as Rutabaga Rabitowitz, a well-dressed, potshot-heaving rabbit and talent agent who briefly dates BoJack’s manager, an upfront Persian cat named Princess Carolyn.

3 Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015) – 93%

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the near-perfect continuation its beloved franchise deserved, and it opened to near-universal critical acclaim.

While Schwartz worked on the film as the voice for BB-8, he also made a physical cameo as a Stormtrooper.

2 Outside In (2018) – 95%

The 2017 indie drama film Outside In follows Chris, a man who was falsely sentenced to prison, eventually being released after serving twenty years. He forms a heavy emotional bond with his former high-school teacher Carol, who petitioned for his release and wrote him often during his sentence, leading to complications in his relationship with her as well as his relationship with his brother, Ted (played by Schwartz).

The film received favorable reviews from critics for its characters, performances, directing, and story.

1 DuckTales (2017-) – 100%

A reboot of the classic 1980s series from Walt Disney Television Animation, 2017’s Ducktales follows feathered siblings Huey, Dewey (who’s voiced by Schwartz), and Louie as they go on adventures with their wealthy uncle Scrooge McDuck, all while unraveling a sinister conspiracy with roots in both the past and present.

While it’s undoubtedly aimed at younger audiences, many critics found the series’ heart and humor refreshing, with some going so far as to hail it a modern classic; the Rotten Tomatoes summary for the series describes it as “highly energetic, distinctively designed, and attuned to its nostalgia” as well as “far bolder than its predecessor.”
