Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler is excited to have Sonic and Tails team up in the sequel. After some online controversy following the titular character’s design, Sonic the Hedgehog zoomed into theaters back in February and won over audiences. The film earned a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating fans were pleased with Sonic’s new design. Not only that, Sonic the Hedgehog made it to $146 million at the US box office, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time domestically. However, any further box office success was hindered by the coronavirus pandemic, which shut down theaters across the country. As a result, Sonic the Hedgehog has been made available on-demand months earlier than expected.

Starring Ben Schwartz as Sonic, the film finds Sonic escaping his extraterrestrial homeland and hiding out in the town of Green Hills, where he meets local sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). A new threat soon arises in the form of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), and it’s up to Sonic to stop his nefarious plans. A sequel has yet to be officially announced, but based on Sonic’s financial success, many are expecting it. It’s also clear Fowler and his team have plans for a sequel, since a post-credits scene for the film showed the arrival of Sonic’s best friend Tails. Fowler has said it was always the plan to introduce Tails in the post-credits scene as a way to hint at Sonic’s greater universe.

Should Sonic the Hedgehog 2 actually happen, Tails will almost certainly play a major role in it. While speaking to SYFY WIRE about Sonic the Hedgehog’s home release, Fowler admitted one of the things that took him most by surprise was fans’ reactions to seeing Tails appear at the end. He then went on to say that this just makes him even more excited for a sequel. Fowler’s comments are below:

Of all the screenings that I would pop in for, seeing people’s reaction to Tails showing up at the end … nothing could have prepared me! To see people respond and having these kids just shout at the screen, and just yell their little brains out. I just never got sick of it. I just loved it. And the idea that we made this whole movie, and we didn’t have a single scene of Sonic and Tails together. It’s incredible, but it also is so exciting [for a sequel].

At this point, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is essentially a given; Paramount just needs to give it the all-clear. There’s a chance that the coronavirus pandemic is slowing down the development process since it’s impacting almost every aspect of filmmaking. However, fans shouldn’t have to worry too much. It’s clear Paramount hoped Sonic the Hedgehog would be a franchise-starter, so the sequel is inevitable.

Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 promises to be a more video game-accurate film, fans are undoubtedly excited at the prospect of it, especially because it promises to include Tails. Based on Fowler’s comments, the Tails post-credits tease really pleased fans, indicating they’ll happily return for a sequel in droves. Paramount might be waiting to announce Sonic the Hedgehog’s sequel, but they shouldn’t take too long.
