In their narratives, people are heroes of their own stories. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, we’re destined to forge independent paths that will shape the course of our lives. Some folks love that idea, while others detest it.

I fall into the latter camp. For me, it’s far easier to latch onto a strong figure who can help me bring purpose to my life. I guess this is a long-winded way of saying I identify with Miles “Tails” Prower, Sonic the Hedgehog’s adoptive brother and loyal sidekick.

One of the things Tails struggles with his lack of confidence. Across all of the Sonic franchise, this manifests as reliance on Sonic. Sonic is everything Tails wants to be – confident, easygoing, and unafraid of risks. Since he’s a kid (eight years old in the games,) it’s no wonder why he looks to Sonic as a strong figure and role model.

But Tails has always had these traits within him, whether he recognizes it or not. He’s been the star of his own games (Tails’ Adventure and Tails’ Skyway Patrol – more games than Knuckles or Shadow,) can be played in solo mode in various Sonic games, and his own stories in the Adventure series. Even in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, he bravely enters an unknown dimension in search of the blue hedgehog.

Oh, and I mention that he’s an effing genius on par with Dr. Robotnik/Eggman? That’s pretty impressive for an eight-year-old.

Still, what makes Tails most admirable in my eyes is his willingness to show up for those he cares about. Even if he’s relegated to the role of a side character, he works for the greater cause and bravely helps Sonic in any way he can regardless of how large his role is.

As a kid, I always wanted to be like Sonic, demeanor-wise. A cool, confident character that must’ve (in my young eyes) been awesome enough in his own right to be the series’ protagonist. When I was a kid, everyone was either a Sonic or Shadow fan kid, and there was hardly any love for the other characters. Or, at the very least, as not as much love as those two hedgies got. I always used to say that those two were my favorite characters in the series, while Tails was either second or third in the list. Nevertheless, whenever I got the opportunity to play as the twin-tailed fox in a Sonic game, of course, I picked him.

In hindsight, I was probably underplaying my own opinions as a youngster. Not many kids want to see themselves identifying as a sidekick. They want to be the coolest character. I was doing the same thing Tails does routinely throughout the franchise – underplay his strengths because they aren’t seen as noteworthy or awe-inspiring as anything Sonic does. If Sonic is a jock, then Tails is a nerd.

Like Tails, I wanted to identify and emulate the “cool kids.” I wanted to discredit my quirks and strengths because I felt like no one would appreciate them. Thus, it became much easier to blend with the crowd than stick out like an extra tail.

But Tails has many strengths and accomplishments, most that Sonic can’t even emulate. He’s managed to work his tails like a propeller, allowing him to fly. He’s the pilot of Sonic’s airplane the Tornado. He’s built various mechanical creations that have helped save the day countless times. Even if he doesn’t see himself as important, he is, in fact, important and vital to Sonic’s heroism.

What I’m saying is that you don’t have to adhere to society’s vision of admirable to be awesome. We all have our skill sets and talents. Just because they aren’t outwardly appreciated doesn’t negate their value.

And I think that’s vital in nourishing our self-worth.
