Jax Teller is the antihero who is at the center of the story of Sons of Anarchy. He is the heir to the MC and the heir of two fathers who built the Sons of Anarchy into what it became, and while he tries his best to be decent and do some things right, he often times fails.

Jax has made an incalculable number of mistakes over the course of his tenure on the series, but here are 10 of his biggest errors that everyone can learn from.

10 Not Letting His Sons Go

Of course at the very end of the series, Jax does finally get his two sons out of the motorcycle club life.

However, Tara, Wendy, and an entire lifetime of experience in the MC repeatedly told Jax that there was no good ending with Abel and Thomas still in the orbit of the club. Jax was very resistant to getting the kids out of this life, and he really shouldn’t have been.

9 Never Committing To Going Legit

According to what Jax always said, getting the Sons of Anarchy into legitimate business was the ultimate goal. But the thing of it is, going legit is not nearly as difficult as Jax made it out to be.

He essentially wanted to have it both ways even though he couldn’t, and if he had to lose out on something in order to gain legitimacy then he wasn’t really willing to do it.

8 Letting His Temper Get The Best Of Him

Throughout the course of the series, Jax had a lot of reason to be angry. And while he did sometimes think things through and make the right choice, often times he would get his anger out first and then think things over later.

That was obviously a huge mistake in a lot of different situations, and if he had thought things through when he was upset then a lot of the horrible things that happened to him and his family wouldn’t have happened at all.

7 Cheating On Tara

Tara Knowles was undeniably the love of Jax’s life, and he stated and proved his undying devotion to her a hundred times over. However, he also habitually cheated on her.

Often times he would do it specifically because he wanted to push her away, but that is a horrible way of dealing with their problems, and if it didn’t work the first few times then maybe he should have stopped trying.

6 Shooting Wendy Up

Jax’s relationship with his ex-wife Wendy was really complicated, and he was more than within his rights to hate her forever after what she did to Abel.

But when Wendy decided she wanted to be in Abel’s life and actually got proactive about it, Jax tried to cut her out in the worst way possible. He shot her up with drugs, which was designed to keep Wendy out of Abel’s life, but could have resulted in a serious relapse or even Wendy’s death.

5 Killing Unser

One of Jax’s greatest and most consistent faults is that he doesn’t pay a lot of mind to collateral damage, and nothing could represent that more clearly than him killing Unser. Unser came to intervene between Jax and Gemma and basically to try to talk some sense into him, and Jax killed him for it.

There were plenty of ways around that outcome, but Unser put himself between Jax and what Jax wanted, so Jax didn’t have a second thought about murdering him.

4 Killing His Mother

Gemma deserved to die for a lot of reasons, and it seemed safe to assume that once she killed Tara her days were numbered. And when Jax basically ripped the world apart looking for revenge, it was kind of a necessity for Gemma to die.

However, Jax did not have to be the one to do it. Gemma was awful and destroyed Jax’s life in a lot of ways, but this is one mission he didn’t have to do himself.

3 Prioritizing The Club Over Almost Anything

Jax does repeatedly say how much he loves the club, and the proof is really in the pudding there. But once things started going south, he should have pulled away.

Having a brotherhood that means a lot to you is one thing, but giving up literally everyone else in your life, and giving up your life, period, is not worth it just to stay in a motorcycle club.

2 Getting Back Together With Tara

Jax loved Tara, and Tara loved Jax. But the entire course of their relationship truly demonstrates that sometimes when you love someone, the best thing you can do for them is let them go.

Being with Jax completely destroyed Tara’s life, and it seems pretty likely that Jax wouldn’t have met such a horrible end had he not gotten back together with Tara either.

1 Not Learning From His Father’s Mistakes

The great irony of Sons of Anarchy is that a huge portion of the story is about John Teller speaking to Jax beyond the grave, and telling him not to make all of the mistakes that he himself made. And in the end, Jax learned nothing from his father.

Or, perhaps he did learn, but he learned those lessons far too late, and the entire driving force behind Jax’s character development was rendered moot by his ultimate destruction.
