Sony has returned the rights to the indie game, The Tomorrow Children, to developer Q-Games. Fans of the game – which had its servers shut down in November 2017 – will be happy to learn it will return in a new and improved form.

As reported by IGN, Q-Games CEO and founder Dylan Cuthbert made an announcement earlier today detailing the news.

“I’d like to thank first and foremost the fans of The Tomorrow Children, without whom I would never have had the confidence to keep pursuing this deal,” Cuthbert said. “Our fans are some of the most amazing gamers out there, and every day for the past four years they have kept the dream alive. I think the happiest thing about this decision is imagining the enjoyment those fans will feel as they re-enter the crazy post-apocalyptic neo-soviet world of The Tomorrow Children.”

Although The Tomorrow Children was met with a mixed critical response when it launched on the PS4 in 2016, it quickly gained a cult following of fans who loved the unique title. The Tomorrow Children was an online-only experience where players worked together to build towns and gather resources. The collaborative gameplay combined with its Pixar-esque art style made it a hit.

“I’d like to thank Sony Interactive Entertainment for also working with me to have the IP returned to Q-Games,” Cuthbert said. “It has taken a concerted effort by all of us to get to this ultimate step, and I’m full of gratitude to everyone involved in the process.”

Cuthbert has a close working relationship with Sony, having been involved with the company since the PS2 days. His studio, Q-Games, has also developed the PixelJunk series for the PlayStation over the years. This relationship perhaps helped Q-Games work out a deal with Sony to return the rights to its game, something Sony rarely does.

“We plan to make quite a few changes for the better, and give The Tomorrow Children the re-launch it deserves,” Cuthbert said. Hopefully, the servers will stay online for more than a year this time.
