A PS5 Slim would be a more budget-friendly next-gen console and would allow Sony to better compete with Xbox’s Series S.

Both Microsoft and Sony have unveiled their next-gen consoles, which are already available for pre-order and will release in November ahead of the holidays. But while both companies have revealed cheaper alternatives to the standard consoles, Microsoft’s Xbox Series S takes the cake as the most affordable console.

Microsoft is offering the Xbox Series X at $499, whereas the Xbox Series S is being sold for nearly half that, at $299. Granted, players will be sacrificing storage and processing power for the cheaper price tag. The Series S has fewer teraflops of GPU as well as less RAM. The Series X, for instance, can show 4K gaming at 60 frame per second, while the Series S is only capable of 1440p at 60 fps. Finally, the Series S has only 512 GB of custom NVMs SSD, whereas the Series X has 1TB. Despite the differences, however, many consumers still see the Xbox Series S as a more attractive option because of its lower financial commitment.

Sony has also revealed a cheaper model of its next-gen PS5 – the PS5 Digital Edition. But unlike the Series S, players won’t be compromising processing power or storage. Rather, the main difference between the PS5 and PS5 Digital is that the latter lacks a disc drive, thereby allowing for its slightly smaller stature. Whereas the Xbox Series S has completely different hardware than the Series X, Sony’s PS5 Digital Edition has the same hardware as its more expensive counterpart. Because of this, it also makes the console pricier than Microsoft’s cheaper next-gen console. While the standard PS5 will set consumers back $499, the PS5 Digital Edition is being sold for slightly less at $399, which is still pricy compared to the Series S’ $299.

Sony Needs A Cheap PS5 To Compete With Microsoft

Right now, Microsoft is clearly winning when it comes to the more affordable console. Though Sony may have the higher price tag, this won’t automatically lead to higher profits if gamers are more enticed to go the Xbox route and purchase the cheapest next-gen console available. That’s why Sony should’ve considered bringing another PS5 model into the fold, one that costs less to make and doesn’t utilize all of the same expensive hardware as higher models.

Sony actually already did this back when they released the last generation of PlayStation consoles, with the introduction of the PS4 Slim. The PS4 slim sold for $299 when it hit markets in 2016, which was three years after the original PS4 debuted, which was priced at $399. Both consoles feature the same GPU and CPU, and so their differences are minimal. In addition to being smaller, the PS4 Slim had slightly less processing power than its counterpart. It had a power consumption of 165W max, while the PS4 was capable of 250w. Similarly, the PS4 Slim was not capable of 4K streaming, unlike the standard PS4.

At the time, Sony also revealed the PS4 Pro, a higher-grade PS4 which featured an upgraded GPU and higher CPU to support better performance and 4K resolution in certain games. Many consumers were excited about the PS4 Pro’s better performance, but its $399 price tag made it inaccessible for many players. As such, it was smart that Sony released the PS4 Slim alongside the better-quality console in order to provide a cheaper alternative to interested consumers. Sony didn’t choose to offer a similar option this time around, at least not at launch. Certainly, there would be a lot of interest in a cheaper PS5 model that rivals the price of the Series S, even if it compromises processing power. Still, given that Sony waited three years after the PS4’s initial release to unveil the PS4 Pro and Slim, it could be a sign that players will have to wait a few more years to see a more cost-effective PS5.
