If you’re as ready for some new Ape Escape action in your lives as we are, you’d better hold on to your weird monkey-mind-control helmets, as it seems like something’s stirring in the franchise for 2020.
As nostalgic PlayStation fans will remember, Ape Escape first launched in 1999. It follows the tale of a young boy named Spike, who had to hop back in time to recapture a bunch of monkeys that had been sent into the future and past by the ape Spector, their leader. Did we mention the time machine, Time Net (which is used for catching said monkeys) and intelligence-enhancing helmets (which Spector and the monkeys wear), all of which were created by Spike’s buddy, a brilliant professor and inventor? There’s nothing confusing here at all.
The original Ape Escape is a colorful, creative, and super fun platformer, which pioneered the use of the PS1’s DualShock controller — it required it, in fact, as the game’s controls were designed around it. Its success spawned sequels, a remake (PSP’s Ape Escape: On The Loose), mini-game compilations, and the usual gubbins. However, all had been quiet on the Ape Escape front for some time… until recently.
In 2019 (the twentieth anniversary of the franchise), there were a couple of hints that a new Ape Escape title might be in the works. In the exciting new world of very early 2020, those rumblings are starting to hot up a little.
A Twitter account created last year for the franchise’s 20th anniversary has piped up again. As you can see above, it’s a simple New Years’ wish (there have been lots of those doing the rounds lately, funnily enough) featuring an array of the series’ iconic monkeys. More tellingly, though, is the fact that it’s accompanied by a promise of “lots of important information.” The message continues, stating that 2020 will be “exciting and wonderful.”
Will it be exciting and wonderful for Ape Escape fans in particular? That’s the implication here. Are we looking at a remake, perhaps? An HD collection? An all-new entry in the series? There’s no telling just yet, but considering that past PlayStation hits like MediEvil have made successful returns, it’s certainly likely.
