The co-founder of Image Comics and creator of Spawn Todd McFarlane has taken to Kickstarter with a plan to breathe new life into the undead antihero, and fans have blown away expectations to show their support. Launching with a campaign goal of $100,000, the project has already exceeded $1 million from more nearly 8,000 backers at time of writing.

First hitting stands in 1992’s Spawn #1, the series has now been running for more than 300 issues, earning it the Guinness Book of World Records title of longest-running creator-owned superhero comic of all time. MacFarlane first made his name working on Spider-Man – co-creating Venom – before co-founding Image Comics in 1992, eventually becoming the country’s largest independent comic book publisher (third overall behind Marvel and DC). The indie character’s popularity would eventually lead to the launch of McFarlane Toys, which is known for its highly detailed and articulated figurines from comics, movies and TV shows. In 1995 McFarlane Toys launched its first product — a Spawn action figure — and now McFarlane is bringing it back, bigger and better than ever, to commemorate the 25th anniversary.

The Kickstarter campaign launched April 8th, and is offering those who pledge a “remastered” version of the famous 1995 action figure that launched the toy branch of McFarlane’s empire, as well as a limited edition variant of the first Spawn comic featuring new original art from the man himself. The figurine will be 7 inches tall, as opposed to the original’s five, it will feature the character’s iconic billowing cape and is said to be twice as articulated as the 1995 model. Variant character models are available, as well as the choice of an autograph from McFarlane. Pledge options range from $10-$160 and McFarlane says in his Kickstarter video that if this campaign is successful, it will be just the first one to reintroduce more of his classic toys.

There have been talks of a potential Spawn movie reboot in the works for years, with Jamie Foxx slated to star in the titular role. Though there were some recent rumblings that the Oscar winner had left the project, McFarlane has assured eager fans that Jamie Foxx is still set to play Spawn. On top of that, McFarlane also claimed that another possible Spawn cast member has been approached who, if he accepts, will “blow up the internet.”

Maybe between the overwhelming success of this Kickstarter, combined with the release of the movie (assuming that happens), we’ll see a resurgence in the character. Considering how much the campaign has already raised, and the speed with which it did, the interest is obviously there. Here’s hoping Spawn will be taking fans to Hell and back all over again.
