The announcement of a new Spider-Man game starring arguably the best spider person of all, Miles Morales, was met with plenty of fanfare when it premiered during Sony’s Playstation 5 livestream. Since then, there’s been a smattering of news revolving around this new web-slinging adventure (including conflicting reports on whether or not it’s a full-fledged game.)

Every hero needs a villain to fight and we can only assume that Insomniac has a great bad guy lined up for Miles to go toe-to-toe with. Surprisingly, Brian Horton, the game’s creative director, recently let loose some information that might have given away exactly who or what it is that Mr. Morales may be venom-striking soon.

Venomous Rumors

There have been some significant leaks and rumors regarding the major villains that Miles will encounter when he makes his Playstation 5 debut. The biggest of these is that he’ll be taking on some form of a symbiote running rampant throughout Harlem. This could mean that we’ll be seeing Venom for the first time in Insomniac’s version of the Spider-verse, or maybe another person will be infected with the weird black space ooze. Harry Osborn appeared to be floating in a tank filled with the stuff at the end of the first game, so perhaps Spider-Man: Miles Morales will have us chasing down Peter’s old bestie.

There have also been other criminal names floating around, most notably The Green Goblin. However, it’s unlikely that it’ll be Norman Osborn riding around on the flying hoverboard hucking pumpkin bombs at people since he’s currently the mayor of New York (although being a supervillain almost seems like a pre-requisite for being a politician these days.) So again, maybe it’ll be Harry under the goblin mask because it just seems like he’s going to get involved in some villainous shenanigans one way or another.

But Horton himself seems to have made it quite clear who the major antagonistic force behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales may be. And if all the internet sleuths are right, it’s something you could have encountered while you slinging around the Big Apple with Peter Parker.

Rock On, Roxxon

As mentioned in an article on Whatculture, this quote from Horton is a pretty strong hint towards exactly what Mile may be going up against:

“Let’s set the scene for the game a little more. It’s now wintertime, about a year after the events of the first game. Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle.”

Well, that’s about as strong of a story synopsis as we could possibly hope for at this stage. Especially the part about the energy corporation, which seems to be a dead giveaway that the Roxxon Corporation may be behind Mr. Morales’ future troubles.

For those who aren’t knee-deep in Marvel lore, the Roxxon Corporation has been a villainous enterprise for decades now. It’s been referenced in various Marvel properties, including the Agent Carter TV series and all three of the Iron Man movies. In the comics, it is usually considered canon that Roxxon is responsible for the death of Howard Stark, Tony’s father. They’re behind cloning experiments, evil covert operations, and even have ties to this whole symbiote mess. So yeah, they’re a pretty crummy company.

As for how they relate to Marvel’s Spider-Man, you may have spotted their corporate building in New York as one of that game’s many Easter eggs. The comic book version of Miles has also battled Roxxon on multiple occasions which makes them a perfect choice for one of his first video game foes. So if the plot of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is going to be centered around anything related to Venom or symbiotes, then it’s looking pretty likely that Miles is going to tangle with Roxxon.

The high-tech army Horton mentions could be an indication that someone like Taskmaster will show up with their own personal force of mercenaries. Or, if we’re really shooting for the moon, maybe it means we’ll get to take on Advanced Idea Mechanics, AKA AIM. Their logo appears on a shipment of boxes in Doctor Octavius’ lab so it’s been established that they exist in the game’s universe. We’re kind of hoping this turns out to be the case because that could mean a potential boss fight or at least a cameo from everyone’s favorite weirdo, MODOK.

Coming Soon To A Weird-Looking White Box

Spider-Man: Mile Morales is expected to be a launch title for the Playstation 5 when it releases later this year. We’re likely to find out more about this new super-powered escapade soon, and don’t be surprised if an evil energy conglomerate turns out to be the thorn in Miles’ side.
