Splatoon 2 hasn’t let up on the monthly Splatfest events, as long-time players will know. This month, Nintendo is shaking the familiar format up a little, in a squid (and octopus, of course) style celebration of Halloween.

So, the much-ballyhooed Nintendo Switch Online service is upon us. It took its super-sweet time getting to us, there’s no doubt about that, but how’s it performing? Well, it’s certainly a cheaper service than Xbox and PlayStation are offering, but is it comparable in value? Some users are accusing Nintendo of being their usual lumbering dial-up dinosaur selves when it comes to online functionality.

The community has a range of mixed feelings about the whole thing. If there’s one point we can probably all agree on, though, it’s that the Japanese giant really should make a more concerted effort to entice us to sign up. Bring must-play new experiences and exclusive online events to their biggest games, say. What’s that, Splatoon 2? You’ve got something super special lined up for October, the spookiest month of the year?

As we know, Halloween is right around the corner. It’s already started, as all the ‘September 30th vs October 1st’ memes flying around social media have made clear. To celebrate this most jack-o-Lantern-filled of occasions, Splatoon 2 is hosting a Splatoween party.

What does this mean? Firstly, it means a good ol’ fashioned Splatfest. Players will be familiar with the setup: you choose your team, battle it out for them and see which side performed best. The teams this time, appropriately enough, are Trick (represented by Pearl) and Treat (represented by Marina). You can pick sides and claim your Splatfest tee from October 5th, and the event itself runs from October 19th-21st. Which is, you know, not actually Halloween, but we won’t be persnickety about that.

This is all well and good, but Splatfests have been hosted every month. This one’s going to need to be a little more special than that. And so it is. Alongside the usual monthly battling action, the stages will be transformed with Halloween-themed decor for the duration. Right down to the usual graffiti on the walls. Furthermore, as Nintendo Life reports, exclusive spooky-themed gear will be given out to players, via Squid Research Lab bulletins in the Nintendo Switch News tab.

Monster masks? A full-on Jason Voorhees hockey mask, come to that? It sure sounds neat, but whether it’s enough to have Switch owners flocking to sign up for online subscriptions remains to be seen.
