It’s been a long time coming for fans of the series, but Splatoon 3 has been officially confirmed for Nintendo Switch. The popular shooter franchise will debut its third entry in 2022, possibly with some sort of single-player narrative. Details are scarce right but there the game’s new trailer and announcement were among the brightest moments of the latest Nintendo Direct presentation.

The long-awaited Splatoon 3 will be the second entry in the series to make its way to Nintendo Switch, following the game’s initial sequel in 2017. The series has made a name for itself based on its unique approach to a competitive third-person shooter, making itself accessible for all ages. Players must paint the map with their team’s color while battling other players, the more paint of the team’s color is on the ground, the easier the player can navigate around the map and quickly achieve victory. It’s colorful, fun, and fills a void of worthwhile competitive shooters on Nintendo platforms.

During a new Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed alongside a new remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword that the long-awaited Splatoon 3 will release in 2022. More details are scheduled to drop in the future, but the first trailer showcases a more expansive customization system as well as a pet that players can walk around with (though it’s unclear if there will be different pets or if players are forced to stick with this weird little chicken/fish hybrid). The trailer also showcases a new environment, a wasteland with an upturned Eiffel Tower and a train taking the player back and forth between this area and the city. The trailer also showcases typical multiplayer matches and combat, but there’s nothing particularly obviously new or noteworthy about it.

The trailer’s YouTube description gives some further ideas of what Splatoon 3 will hold in store. “Splatoon 3 arrives on Nintendo Switch in 2022! In the wake of chaos, enter the sun-scorched Splatlands and the new city, Splatsville, inhabited by battle-hardened Inklings and Octolings. New weapons, moves, and more await, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates in the future,” reads the trailer description. This seems to confirm that there will be more unique content not yet shown in the initial release trailer. In particular, players will be keeping a close eye out for any new weapons that the game might feature.

The Nintendo Direct also confirmed a number of other new games beyond Splatoon 3, such as a collection of Ninja Gaiden games. Unfortunately, there were no new details revealed for Breath of the Wild 2, but it was confirmed that the game would be getting more info later this year. Nintendo also debuted the first look at a new Mario Golf game, ports of titles like Stubbs the Zombie, as well as new third-party titles like a DC Super Hero Girls game. Needless to say, the future of the Nintendo Switch is diverse and quite compelling.
