Spotify Blend Lets You Mix And Match Music With Your Friends

Looking to make Spotify more personal and social than it already is, the music streaming app just launched Spotify Blend — a new feature that enables users to blend their favorite songs into one combined playlist. One of the many strengths Spotify’s touted over its competitors is the social element. Compared to Apple Music, Amazon Music, or anything else, Spotify feels like a much more interactive service. Whether it be the deep integration with Facebook or the endless ways to share Spotify links on social media, Spotify has never felt like a lonely place.

This past July, Spotify decided to take that element a step further with the Blend beta. It allowed two Spotify users to combine their listening preferences and create a personal playlist based on each person’s taste. There have been a couple of bumps in the road given that it’s been a beta test, but the overall reception has been quite positive.

Nearly three months later, Spotify has removed the ‘beta’ moniker and launched Spotify Blend as a fully-featured part of the app. The core experience is mostly the same: two users join a Blend, Spotify analyzes what they listen to, and it generates a playlist with that information. As part of the official launch, however, parts of Spotify Blend are now better than ever. There’s new cover art for Blend playlists, a ‘taste match score’ indicates how someone’s listening habits compare to their friends, and two people in a Blend can now share social media-friendly stories with information about each other’s music tastes. Similar to other Spotify playlists, Blends are updated daily and adapt “based on what listeners stream.”

What Spotify’s Saying About Blend

In its blog post announcing Blend’s proper launch, Spotify interviewed a few of its employees to get their take on their feature. While they’re obviously hyping it up as a huge deal for Spotify, it is interesting to get the inside take on where the company sees Blend as a whole. According to product manager Arjun Narayen, he notes that “Blend is one of the first products we’ve developed that requires multiuser personalization, which has its unique challenges but also helps us create some really delightful experiences when we get it right.” Senior engineer Jen Lamere shared similar thoughts, saying, “Blend is so different from most of the other Spotify offerings because it automatically combines the tastes of two different users into a playlist.”

Blend seems like such an obvious win for Spotify. Two of the service’s greatest strengths are music personalization and social integration. Blend puts both of those things on full display and combines them in a way that’s fun and engaging. Whether it’s enough to entice more people to switch to Spotify remains to be seen, but it certainly is a welcome addition for anyone already on the app.
