Spy Kids Cast Where Are They Now

An iconic piece of early aughts kid cinema, Spy Kids (2001) melded 007-style action with Robert Rodriguez’s cartoonish directing sensibility for a pint-sized espionage thriller that was butt-kicking fun for the whole family. Starring up-and-comers Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara as bickering siblings who discover that their parents are actually secret agents, Spy Kids was a bonafide box-office hit that is fondly remembered by an entire generation of kids and pre-teens. Though its success led to a profusion of sequels—the best of which, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams came nipping at the first’s heels in 2002, and the worst of which, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (which was released in “aromascope”) came out in 2011—the first is inarguably the best in the series. Below, we check in with the core cast and see what they’ve been up to since hanging up their high-tech binoculars and black tactical suits.

8 Antonio Banderas

The most famous of the original cast, Banderas brought his signature smolder and suaveness to his role as the male head of the Cortez household, Gregorio. Shortly after his time as a super-spy, Banderas received a Tony Nomination for his performance in the Broadway musical Nine and starred as everyone’s favorite CGI cat, Puss In Boots in Shrek 2 (2004). More recently, he returned to his roots in Pedro Almodovar’s horror-tinged thriller The Skin I Live In (2011), and divorced longtime wife Melanie Griffith in 2015. He is currently dating gorgeous banker Nicole Kimpel and is slated to appear in the upcoming X-Men film, New Mutants, due out this August.

7 Carla Gugino

Though Gugino has been in the business since the late 80s, the actress is just starting to make herself into a household name thanks in large part to director Mike Flanagan. As Ingrid, the mom of the Cortez family, Gugino was the perfect foil for Banderas, offering up a feminine cool to compliment his masculine suave. Since starring in Spy Kids, Gugino has been in a bevy of diverse projects, including two films with Zack Snyder (Watchmen in 2009 and Sucker Punch in 2011 ) a Broadway stint (in Suddenly, Last Summer and Desire Under the Elms), and a recurring gig on TV’s Entourage. Her most recent work with Flanagan, however, is some of her finest and most lauded to date, owning the screen as Jessie in Netflix’s adaptation of Stephen Kings’ Gerald’s Game and as Olivia Crain family in the smash hit The Haunting of Hill House.

6 Alexa Vega

Vega starred as Carmen, the taller of the pint-sized spy duo. Due to her success as a recording artist and popularity throughout the series, Vega was named one of 2003’s hottest teen stars in Vanity Fair, though she hasn’t quite set the world on fire in her post-Spy Kids career, working largely in television and independent movies. In 2014, Vega wed actor/singer Carlos Pena Jr., and the duo adopted “PenaVega” as their married name. The two competed against each other on the 21st season of Dancing With The Stars and share a Youtube channel (called LexLovesLos) that currently has several hundred thousand subscribers. Most recently, the couple announced that they are pregnant with their second child, a boy, due at the end of this year.

5 Daryl Sabara

As troublemaking redhead Juni, Sabara was a role-model to mischief-making little brothers everywhere. Fans were shocked and surprised to see Sabara as a bully beaten to death by a young Michael Myers in Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007) but were truly gobsmacked when the fairly lowkey actor started dating megawatt recording artist Meghan Trainor in July of 2016. The two were married on Trainor’s 25th birthday, December 22nd, 2018, giving birth to an adorable viral video moment.

4 Alan Cumming

The mad inventor and TV show host, Floop, who ran with a cavalcade of freaks (or, more specifically, “fooglies”), Cumming followed up his role in Spy Kids with a turn as the blue-skinned teleporter Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United (2003). As one of the theater world’s most celebrated actors, Cumming reprised his role as the Emcee in Sam Mendes’ restaging of his seminal 1998 production of Cabaret, which was still fizzy and vital in 2014. That same year, he published his autobiography “Not My Father’s Son” and most recently he headlined Jeremy O’Harris’ Off-Broadway hit play, Daddy, as a titular mega-rich art collector with a taste for younger men.

3 Teri Hatcher

Hatcher’s career really kicked into high gear after Spy Kids. Though known as Lois Lane to Gen X-ers and memorably bedding Pierce Brosnan’s Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) when Desperate Housewives hit the scene in 2004, Hatcher and her co-stars became household names overnight and she was quickly elevated to one of the highest paid actresses in television. Since the show folded, Hatcher has continued working but kept more of a low profile with a recurring role on the CW’s Supergirl and a Youtube Channel called “Hatching Change” which she launched in 2018.

2 Cheech Marin

Marin was already a national treasure by the time he took on the role of Juni and Carmen’s fake uncle, Felix. Making a name for himself as part of the Grammy-Award-winning comedy duo Cheech and Chong in the early 1970s, Marin has had a fruitful career as a hippie/stoner culture icon. After Spy Kids, Marin re-teamed with his partner-in-crime, Tommy Chong in 2008, and the two have been lighting up cities from around the country for the past decade with a musical comedy show that highlights the famous stoners wild careers.

1 Danny Trejo

Few could predict what cultural impact “Uncle Machete” would have outside of the Spy Kids universe. Played by stalwart supporting actor Danny Trejo, the character became something of a box-office darling in his own right when Rodriguez gave him his own big screen adventure based on the phony trailer he made for Grindhouse, titled Machete in 2010. The film was successful enough that it was followed by a sequel, Machete Kills in 2013. More recently, Trejo has made guest appearances on everything from Rick and Morty to The Flash, opened a series of successful restaurants/food trucks bearing his name, and begun producing his own films.
