Spy x Family may still be relatively new, but it’s quickly becoming one of the biggest hits in recent memory, with a bright future ahead of it as the latest manga sensation. Most manga doesn’t reach wide, mainstream popularity around the world until an anime adaptation hits the market to bring more attention to the books in the process. However, Spy x Family is quickly becoming an exception to the rule.

Spy x Family tells the story of Loid, aka Twilight, a spy who must form a makeshift family in order to fulfill a difficult mission. Loid is joined by Yor Forger, an assassin, and Anya, a young telepath, with each member of the family unit lying about their true nature in order to achieve their own goals.

Oricon, Japan’s leading statistics and information supplier, Oricon, recently released a chart chronicling the top 30 highest selling manga volumes of 2021. While it’s no surprise to see popular titles like One Piece, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen dominate the list, Spy x Family’s presence is a bit more shocking. Both Spy x Family and Attack on Titan are the only titles to appear on the list once each, while Spy x Family (ranking at number 27 for Vol. 6, which sold 1,229,131 copies) itself is the only title on the list without an anime adaptation currently on the air.

Spy x Family first debuted within the confides of Shonen Jump+ back in March of 2019. Since then, the serial had been pegged as a manga to watch on the verge of a breakout any moment. No one expected that breakout to come as soon as a year and nine months after its initial release, but the proof is in the numbers. Perhaps having the illustrious Shonen Jump stamp of approval always marked Spy x Family for greatness, but no one thought that the series would become such a best-selling hit quite so quickly, especially without an anime adaptation to pull in fans.

Currently, an anime adaptation from Wit Studio and CloverWorks is in the works with an impending 2022 premiere date on the horizon. If past precedent is to be believed, then Spy x Family’s popularity is bound to increase once the anime releases. As is normally the case with anime adaptations, the popularity of the manga is only likely to inspire increased popularity in the sales of the manga. Fans of Demon Slayer have argued in the past that much of that manga’s popularity came partly due to the success of the anime adaptation, as well as the follow-up Mugen Train movie that wound up being the highest-grossing movie of 2020.

It seems inevitable that Spy x Family will receive a similar spike in popularity once the anime comes out, but manga sales make it clear that even that bump will come on top of an incredibly solid base. Already appearing in the top-sellers list with an anime on the way means Spy x Family is primed to become a full-fledged cultural phenomenon. Only time will tell, but Spy x Family has clearly already earned a loving place in the hearts of readers around the world, and its popularity can only go up from here.
